Biography
80's London club act with an esteemed heritage. Featured on the singles, being covers of TOM JONES classics, would be WEAPON vocalist Danny Hynes, SWEET guitarist Andy Scott, Mal McNulty of SWEET and WEAPON, Jeff Brown of SWEET and STATETROOPER, ex-GRAND PRIX, OPERATOR, GMT and TARRACO keyboard player Phil Lanzon with drummer Bruce Bisland of SWEET, WEAPON and PRAYING MANTIS. Lanzon later joined URIAH HEEP as their long term keyboard player. Bisland and Brown would re-activate STATETROOPER during 2003.
The band had been founded in December of 1984, assembled as a live party band in substitute for a disco. Named PADDY GOES TO HOLYHEAD by Hynes' Canadian girlfriend, because the band had three Irishmen involved, the very first line up comprised vocalist Danny Hynes, guitarists Mal McNulty and Jimmy Gaynor, bassist Brendan Finglas and Herman on drums.
The group would lose its rhythm section but in 1986 found itself in the recording studio with producer Andy Scott of the SWEET laying down 'The Green, Green Grass Of Home'. Alongside Hynes and McNulty would be bassist Jeff Brown, keyboard player Phil Lanzon and drummer Bruce Bisland. Upon completion of these sessions Andy Scott then enrolled for live work, subsequently being replaced by Tino Troy of PRAYING MANTIS. In this formation the band gigged for a few years before splintering, ex-members forming THE WANDERING CRUTCHLESS.
Hynes persevered with PADDY GOES TO HOLYHEAD, performing on the club circuit with a fluid band line up, which at various times included Syd Twynham of MUD, bass players John Berry of MUD and SLADE 2, Phil Spalding from the MICK JAGGER band and drummer Mick Tucker of SWEET. For a June 1989 gig at the London Marquee the band featured Hynes, guitarists Pete Bullick and Des Duffy, bassist Phil Spalding and drummer Mick Tucker. By the following month a fresh rhythm section of bassist Gareth Thomas and drummer Ian Morgan was incorporated. However, that September a two month tour of Dubai commenced seeing Syd Twynham back on guitar and Jan Alkema on session drums. Upon their return the HEAVY METAL KIDS veteran Keith Boyce took command of the drums.
PADDY GOES TO HOLYHEAD evolved further when Gareth Thomas was superseded by former DIRTY TRICKS man Terry Horbury and in 1992 Andy Burgess became second guitarist. 1993 saw Pete Bullick and Keith Boyce joining DEBBIE BONHAM's band. John Fraser-Binnie, of DIRTY TRICKS and ROGUE MALE, stepped in on guitar while Alf Main became the new drummer. This line-up of PADDY GOES TO HOLYHEAD entered Surrey Sound Studios to record the debut album 'Greatest Hits (And Other Fairytales)' produced by New Zealander Simon Shazell. The album was released in August of 1997, after which the PRAYING MANTIS duo of Chris and Tino Troy were enlisted. Simon Jeffery replaced drummer Alf Main in 2003.
