Biography
HAWKWIND guitarist HUW LLOYD LANGTON, a native of Harlesden, North London, had started playing guitar at school. His debut professional gig was a six month tenure on the German club scene with WINSTON G, a band including future PLAYER and LITTLE FEAT bassist Pete Beckett. The guitarist returned to the UK in 1969, joining the HAWKWIND line up comprising DAVE BROCK, Jon Harrison, Terry Ollis and Dik Mik. After recording the band's now classic first brace of albums he left them after an illness in late 1971.
In the following years Langton taught guitar at a comprehensive school in Streatham for a year and did numerous sessions, one included writing the music for a cartoon narrated by Vivian Stanshall of the BONZO DOG DOO DA BAND. He would also tour as live musician for Pop artist Leo Sayer. Another project was the band SALT, with top Austrian artist Bobby Hammer, recording an album 'Best Of British Rock' now highly sought after on the collectors market. Other ventures included AMON DIN with Dave Anderson AMON DUUL's bass player, GALLERY with Rob Rawlinson on Bass from IAN HUNTER's 'Overnight Angels' band and MAGILL alongside Pete Scott from SAVOY BROWN.
Between 1974 to 1978 Langton operated WIDOWMAKER, touring the USA and recording two Billboard chart albums. This hotly tipped band included Steve Ellis of LOVE AFFAIR, Aerial Bender from MOTT THE HOOPLE, future RAINBOW and OZZY OSBOURNE bassist Bob Daisley and Paul Nicholls of LINDISFARNE. Throughout this entire period Langton occasionally joined HAWKWIND onstage he did not return full time until 1979, when their album 'Live '79' broke into the top 10 UK charts.
In 1982 he formed the LLOYD LANGTON GROUP to gig between HAWKWIND quiet periods. Langton's first extracurricular effort was a live album, 'Outside The Law', recorded at Brentford's Red Lion pub! Other musicians on the album comprised of former CLIMAX BLUES BAND bassist Bob Rawlinson and drummer John Clark. However, it would be an inauspicious move into a solo band career as 'Outside The Law' was soon to be condemned by Langton as a bootleg.
In January 1984 the LLOYD-LANGTON GROUP embarked on a British tour with the trio's line-up remaining stable. However, the 1986 album,'Like An Arrow Through The Heart', was recorded with Langton, Clark and bassist Kenny Wilson and once more the band embarked on a lengthy club tour, this time supported by MOURNBLADE. The band later undertook a lengthy British club tour during the winter of 1994, the year 'River Run' appeared. Opting to pursue a solo path HUW LLOYD LANGTON put in a set of live dates in Sweden during 1995 taking along a band which included former MOTT and BRITISH LIONS guitarist Ray Majors. An album, 'On The Move', was cut in 1996. A further LLOYD LANGTON GROUP album, 'Chain reaction, was released for sale privately in 1999.
In September 2000 Langton rejoined HAWKWIND for the 'Hawkestra Re-Union' gig at London's Brixton Academy. He officially rejoined the band in 2001. However, the guitarist contracted Legionnaires disease on a UK run of dates, this condition leaving him very fragile. Suffering from a variety of bone breakages in his arms and wrist Langton bowed out of dates in December of 2002.
