Biography
The bassist with legends LED ZEPPELIN. Previous to his term with Rock's biggest band, Jones had replaced Chris Dreja in THE YARDBIRDS in 1966, pre LED ZEPPELIN John Paul Jones had forged a living as a much in demand session player, often working alongside guitarist JIMMY PAGE. Jones' first step into professional recording came with his induction into THE TONY MEEHAN GROUP during 1964 as bassist. A solo single 'Baja' on Pye Records followed. This is now a much sought after rarity.
Jones' reputation spread via accomplished work with artists such as the ROLLING STONES and THE YARDBIRDS and by late summer of 1968 the bassist sealed the line-up for LED ZEPPELIN. A twelve year tenure with undisputably the biggest Rock band the world has yet to see made Jones a household name, this despite his reluctance to step into the limelight outside of the confines of the stage. His musical contributions to the band were great and far reaching, many of the band's acknowledged classic material rooted in Jones' keyboard contributions.
The man's first musical work following the 1980 LED ZEPPELIN split following the untimely death of drummer John Bonham was the film soundtrack to the Michael Winner film 'Scream For Help'. Unfortunately both film and album died a quick death, although the album featured his former LED ZEPPELIN colleague JIMMY PAGE on guitar, ex-PENTANGLE guitarist John Renbourne and YES vocalist JON ANDERSON. The bass player appeared with LED ZEPPELIN for the one off 'Live Aid' performance in July 1985 which only served to ignite the reformation rumour mill again.
Production work followed with Gothic Rockers THE MISSION. Many felt Jones work on the 'Children' album pushed the band to deliver their best work to date and the hit single 'Tower Of Strength' harked of being a long lost LED ZEPPELIN classic.
Jones guested live with THE MISSION for one show in March, this performance being captured for Channel 4's 'wired' TV show and as a free single with 'Sounds' magazine.
Jones reunited with Page and ROBERT PLANT in May of 1988 for the Atlantic Records anniversary party show which naturally refuelled rumours of a full blown LED ZEPPELIN reunion. Although Jones subsequent appearances on stage were rare, the man did guest with RED BYRD in 1991 and with LENNY KRAVITZ at the 1993 MTV awards performing 'Are You Gonna Go My Way'.
In a welcome burst of activity the bassist came back to the fore as producer of the 1994 live acoustic HEART album 'The Road Home'. Not only did Jones produce but he appeared live with the band too on bass and mandolin. Jones also collaborated on the critically acclaimed 'The Sporting Life' album with eccentric diva DIAMANDA GALAS. The ensuing world tour included Jones in the ranks and often featured LED ZEPPELIN's 'Communication Breakdown'.
The 1999 release 'Zooma' was issued on KING CRIMSON guitarist Robert Fripp's label Discipline and sees drums courtesy of Pete Thomas, guest guitar from KING CRIMSON's Trey Gunn as well as the inclusion of the London Symphony Orchestra.
2001 would find Jones in alliance with American guitarist ADAM BOMB (a.k.a. 'Pink Gibson' of GET ANIMAL). He would make his presence felt once again in Japan during late August of 2003, forming up part of the "Guitar Wars" shows in Osaka and Tokyo alongside guitarists PAUL GILBERT of RACER X and MR. BIG repute, NUNO BETTENCOURT of EXTREME fame and the esteemed erstwhile GENESIS guitarist STEVE HACKETT. Subsequently Jones would get back into the production chair, working with rising Kiwi Rockers THE DATSUNS. The Summer of 2004 found the bassist back on the road in North America as a guest performer with a project entitled THE MUTUAL ADMIRATION SOCIETY, this comprising is ex-TOAD THE WET SPROCKET man Glen Phillips along with Sara Watkins, Chris Thile, and Sean Watkins of NICKEL CREEK. Upon completion of the tour Jones set to work on a new solo album. In early 2005 it would be revealed that the bassist had put down tracks for a new FOO FIGHTERS album.
Speculation arose in 2008 as to extracurricular activities of John Paul Jones when the musician posted an online update in April stating he hoped "to be everywhere this summer" with "a couple of other people" and "on some other music, which is more rock-based." This transpired to involve Dave Grohl of the FOO FIGHTERS and QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE frontman Josh Homme. The three had guested with each other's acts previously, Grohl as session studio drummer for QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE and Jones having sat in on FOO FIGHTERS concerts.
In late July 2009 Jesse Hughes of EAGLES OF DEATH METAL, another of Homme's projects, revealed on an on-air radio interview the Jones / Grohl / Homme project was going by the name THE CROOKED VULTURES.
