Biography

Born 14th May 1943 in Bishopbriggs, Scotland, Jack Bruce's pedigree includes stints with BLUES INCORPORATED, GRAHAM BOND ORGANISATION (alongside drummer GINGER BAKER), JOHN MAYALL'S BLUES BREAKERS and MANFRED MANN, before finding fame with CREAM.

Bruce's first single, recorded previous to CREAM, featured COLOSSEUM drummer John Hiseman, saxophonist Dick Heckstall-Smith and guitarist Chris Spedding, whilst the man's most notable post CREAM success came with his debut solo album, 1969's 'Song For A Tailor', but, acknowledged as the main songwriting force behind CREAM and maintaining a loyal and steadfast fanbase, he struggle for commercial recognition from then on.

1971's 'Things We Like' album saw Bruce uniting with guitarist John McLaughlin and former JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE drummer Mitch Mitchell, whilst 1972 witnessed a liaison with LESLIE WEST and Corky Laing of MOUNTAIN to form WEST, BRUCE & LAING.

Concentrating on his solo career once more, in 1974 Jack recruited an entirely new band consisting of ROLLING STONES guitarist Mick Taylor, STONE THE CROWS keyboard player Ronnie Leahy, pianist Carla Bley and drummer Bruce Gary. However, the 1977 album 'How's Tricks' witnessed a complete personnel change, with the inclusion of noted session drummer Simon Phillips, guitarist Hughie Burns and keyboard player Tony Hymas.

In 1980 Bruce opted to draft in a completely fresh set of musicians, this time choosing to work with ex COLOSSEUM / BAKERLOO guitarist Clem Clemson, guitarist Dave Sancious and drummer Billy Cobham. Shortly after the, 'I've Always Wanted To Do This' album's release Bruce formed BRUCE, LORDON & TROWER with guitarist ROBIN TROWER and Bill Lordon in 1981. The bassist also put in a session to TREVOR RABIN's 'Wolf' album the same year. The BRUCE, LORDON & TROWER trio cut the quaintly titled 'B.L.T.' album before the unit replaced Lordan with an earlier Trower band member drummer Reg Isadore to create BRUCE & TROWER for 1982's 'Truce'.

The 1988 released 'Inazuma Super Session - Absolutely Live' album witnessed Bruce working with PERE UBU drummer Anton Fier and guitarist Kenji Suzuki. True to form, Bruce opted for all new faces for his next album, 'A Question Of Time'. Guests included world renowned Jazz guitarist ALLAN HOLDSWORTH, erstwhile CREAM colleagues drummer GINGER BAKER and guitarist ERIC CLAPTON together with Dick Heckstall-Smith and Clem Clempson once more.

Obviously having re-discovered a bit of the old CREAM chemistry, Bruce teamed up with GINGER BAKER once again for live dates in Germany during 1993. Other musicians involved included ex THIN LIZZY guitarist GARY MOORE, ex COLOSSEUM guitarist Clem Clempson and drummer Simon Phillips. Clearly delighted with how things had gone, in 1994 Jack chose to form BBM with Baker and Moore, resulting in a top ten chart album for Virgin entitled 'Around The Next Dream'.

The bassist's 50th birthday celebrations would be captured on the 1997 live album 'Sittin' On Top Of The World', both Baker and Moore put in appearances as did erstwhile COLOSSEUM colleagues saxophonist Dick Heckstall-Smith and guitarist Clem Clempson. Besides solo material the record witnessed Bruce and friends delivering renditions of Blues standards by HOWLIN' WOLF, BUDDY GUY and WILLIE DIXON topped off with an encore of CREAM's 'Sunshine Of Your Love'.

Bruce cut a new new solo album in 2001 which included a re-recorded studio version of the CREAM classic 'Sunshine Of Your Love'. Guitarists guesting on this track were no less than GARY MOORE and ERIC CLAPTON. He would also appear at the 2001 annual 'Rock & Blues' festival in the UK as part of the German ex-SCORPIONS guitar genius ULI JON ROTH's headline show. This gig seeing JACK BRUCE alongside the UFO trio of Phil Mogg, PETE WAY and Michael Schenker as guests. This performance would be captured on the 'Live At Castle Donington' album released in Japan by Nippon Crown and through SPV in Europe. As well as Uli's own material, UFO and JIMI HENDRIX numbers the album captures run throughs of CREAM's 'Sunshine Of Your Love' and 'White Room'.

The success of these shows prompted the announcement of a further run of gigs dubbed the 'Legends Of Rock', to commence in ULI JON ROTH's home town of Aberystwyth in mid November, the billing included JACK BRUCE, former JETHRO TULL drummer Clive Bunker, UFO's Michael Schenker and former DEEP PURPLE star GLENN HUGHES. Famed Canadian guitarist FRANK MARINO would be a later addition.
