IF

Biography

Progressive Rock act from the early seventies founded with a line up of vocalist J.W. Hodkinson, guitarist Terry Smith, bassist Jim Richardson, former FERRIS WHEEL drummer Dennis Elliot and saxophonists Dick Morrisey and Dave Quincy. This line up of IF was to remain stable for the first four albums. 1972's 'Waterfall' saw new members in bassist Dave Wintour and drummer Cliff Davies although the record does contain earlier material laid down with Richardson and Elliot. IF broke up with Hodkinson joining DARRYL WAY'S WOLF. Elliot would later turn up as part of the hugely successful FOREIGNER. Smith and Quincy stuck together to forge ZZEBRA. Wintour was to play with RICK WAKEMAN then form part of PHOENIX in 1980. He would also appear in the SPENCER DAVIS GROUP and THE PRETTY THINGS.

IF was reformed for a new recording contract with Gull Records although only Morrisey was left to retain the name. The all new band included guitarist GEOFF WHITEHORN and ex-TED NUGENT & THE AMBOY DUKES keyboard player Gabriel Magno who had joined IF when Nugent was forced from the limelight due to a bleeding ulcer. Meantime Dave Wintour sessioned on ROGER DALTREY's 1973 debut 'Daltrey'.

The 1974 IF album was recorded with help on bass duties from MICK ABRAHAMS BAND man Walt Monaghan and following an American / Canadian tour Monaghan replaced original bassist Tomich for good, the latter joining REPUTATION in 1975.

IF folded in 1975. Magno hooked up with CHAMELEON then TXR. Monoghan was to appear on TED NUGENT's 1979 album 'State Of Shock'.

Guitarist Geoff Whitehorn found himself much in demand in FANTASY, FILTHY McNASTY, CHUCK FARLEY, BAD COMPANY and PROCUL HARUM. The guitarist has also issued four solo albums.
