Biography

FANTASY was a Progressive Rock outfit from Gravesend that was snapped up by major label Polydor but to little avail. The band was founded in 1970 titled CHAPEL FARM by Paul Petley on vocals, David Read on bass and keyboard player Dave Metcalfe. Joining this trio were drummer Brian Chatham and guitarist Bob Vann. The band almost immediately succumbed to tragedy however when a drunken stroll for Vann led to his death at a 'Melody Maker' gig, the guitarist falling off a cliff. The 18 year old's body was found on the beach the next morning.

The band opted for a name change to FIREQUEEN, not before Chatham quit being replaced by ex-JOY drummer Jon Webster. Petley was also to depart in favour of vocalist Paul Lawrence and joining him was also guitarist Peter James. Polydor Records signed the band but forced the name change to FANTASY, believing FIREQUEEN to be too close to QUEEN.

The band's debut album, issued in 1973 featured a fresh line up as guitarist GEOFF WHITEHORN, who had appeared on three albums by fellow progsters IF, joined the ranks. The album now commands prices as high as £300. A second album 'Beyond And Beyond' was recorded in 1974 but was shelved by Polydor as the band split. (The album eventually emerged in 1992).

Whitehorn joined CRAWLER replacing legendary guitarist PAUL KOSSOFF before journeying through FILTHY McNASTY, BAD COMPANY and PROCUL HARUM as well as issuing solo albums along the way.
