Biography
Tynesiders GEORDIE, featuring ex STONEWALL guitarist Vic Malcolm, are more noted for frontman Brian Johnson finding fame with one of the world's biggest Rock bands AC/DC than any musical legacy. The band plied hard Pop that found minor chart success. A coincidence occured in 1973 when GEORDIE found their support band for European dates to be an Australian act that had won the gigs as the prize in a 'Battle Of Sounds' competition. The band was called FRATERNITY, the singer Bon Scott. Following GEORDIE's split Johnson, after a period of singing for TV commercials, joined AC/DC as the replacement for the late Bon Scott, following his tragic death in 1980.
Surprisingly, GEORDIE reformed, albeit naturally without Johnson, and changed their name to POWERHOUSE in 1985, releasing an eponymous album in the same year which found the group in a much more commercial Hard Rock vein.
In 2001 GEORDIE, billed as GEORDIE II, made a return to action even putting in live shows with a guesting Brian Johnson. The AC/DC singer would also record two songs 'Byker Hill' and 'Wor Geordie's Lost His Liggie' for inclusion on an ambitious 20CD box set celebrating Northern culture entitled 'Northumbria Anthology'.
The 2002 re-issue of the 'No Sweat' album by Essential Records would add four bonus tracks from 1982 BBC Radio sessions. In 2005 Russian label OVC Media released an album entitled 'Geordie Unreleased Tapes'. A limited edition of just 500 copies, it featured 12 GEORDIE tracks, including 10 previously unavailable, two being sung by guitarist Vic Malcolm, the rest by Brian Johnson, recorded between 1973 and 1975, plus Brian Johnson's solo single from 1976.
