Biography
Having made his name fronting up the two now legendary first brace of IRON MAIDEN albums singer PAUL DIANNO would strike out on a solo trail. Dianno's quite awesome vocal capabilities could never be in doubt but confusingly for fans the man has over the years released product under the DIANNO and PAUL DIANNO titles as well as having led acts such as KILLERS, BATTLEZONE and PRAYING MANTIS.
Following his departure from IRON MAIDEN Paul Dianno had quickly formed LONEWOLF with a backing band made up of ex members of MINAS TIRITH, which proved to be a surprisingly a much more commercial AOR proposition than IRON MAIDEN.
LONEWOLF only got together a few London shows, including supporting SAD CAFE at the Marquee before Paul left the band to team up with SHANGHAI TYGER. In later years LONE WOLF guitarist Paul Ward allied himself with American female vocalist Electra Macleod, previously with Progressive Rock act TWELFTH NIGHT and ex-PRAYING MANTIS drummer Mick Ransome in the short lived RICH BITCH.
Meantime, SHANGHAI TYGER saw Dianno matched to a band comprising guitarists Darren Aldridge and Tony Higgs, ex-DEEP MACHINE man Andy Wrighton on bass and original IRON MAIDEN drummer Ron Rebel.
1984 Dianno signed an entirely new band, entitled simply DIANNO, to King Records in Japan and recorded the bizarrely named 'Two Swimmers And A Bag Of Jockeys' album. The line-up for this band was Lee Slater on guitar, ex-LONEWOLF and RICH BITCH man Paul 'P.J.' Ward on guitar, Kevin Brown on bass and keyboard player Mark Venebles. The album surfaced in Britain more sensibly titled 'Dianno' on Heavy Metal Records, peaking at number 105 in the British charts. The single from the album was a cover of CLIFF RICHARD's 'Heartuser'!
A UK club tour followed on which the band was joined by former DEF LEPPARD and WAYSTED drummer Frank Noon. In early 1985, Ward and Slater quit and ex-WHITE SPIRIT and GILLAN guitarist Janick Gers entered the fold, but Dianno was to tire of the group and was to form the much heavier BATTLEZONE and then KILLERS. Kevin Brown and Mark Venebles duly joined a reformed AIRRACE. Gers would of course later team up with Dianno's former employers IRON MAIDEN enjoying a stint working with Dianno's replacement in that band BRUCE DICKINSON.
In 1990 Paul was invited to assemble a NWoBHM 'supergroup' to tour Japan and release a live album. The band comprised of Dianno, original IRON MAIDEN guitarist Dennis Stratton, Tino and Chris Troy from PRAYING MANTIS and STATETROOPER, WEAPON and SWEET drummer Bruce Bisland.
Whilst still fronting KILLERS Dianno was found to be contributing to various other projects such as IRON MEN and TRUE BRITS, although the singer was to venture into solo-dom again with the 'Paul Dianno' album released through Wild World Productions in 1997.
The man resurrected the DIANNO band tag again in 2000 recording his next album with a completely Brazilian band and for a Brazilian label. The resulting record 'Nomad' was generally perceived to be a welcome return to form. Featured musicians included the KARMA duo of keyboard player Fabrizio Di Sarno and guitarist Chico Dehira. Others involved included guitarist Paulo Turin and bassist Felipe Andreoli. However, A projected American tour was cancelled when it emerged there was an outstanding warrant for the singer in Britain.
The singer did tour South America though and tapes from these dates were assembled into a live album, simply titled 'Live', featuring solely IRON MAIDEN tracks. Confusingly Dianno issued this album under yet another new title the album being credited to PAUL DIANNO AND THE BEAST. Meantime DIANNO's Brazilian drummer Aquiles Priester would join the revamped ANGRA in 2001.
Dianno assembled a fresh band later in the year. Initially included was previous associate guitarist Graham Bath but he would be replaced by Marcus Thurston in September for ensuing European dates.
In a novel twist in late 2008 the IRON MAIDENS: IRON MAIDEN TRIBUTE band united with Dianno to act as his backing band for two shows in California on 26th December at the San Juan Capistrano Coach House and the following evening at Redondo Beach's Brixton venue.
