Biography
Vocalist and founder of URIAH HEEP, David Byron fronted the group between 1970 and 1976, previous to which the singer had been a member of THE STALKERS. With Byron as frontman URIAH HEEP carved out a unique niche for themselves, with a series of successful albums. In 1975 Byron went solo for 'Take No Prisoners'. The album included BEDLAM and BIG BERTHA bassist Denny Ball and ex-SILVERHEAD drummer Pete Thompson. The singer quit URIAH HEEP due to internal disagreements and embarked on a patchy solo career.
After two unsuccessful solo albums, rounded off by 'Baby Faced Killer' in 1977, as well as a brief liaison with ROUGH DIAMOND, a band that featured erstwhile BAKERLOO, COLOSSEUM and HUMBLE PIE guitarist Clem Clempson, Byron formed THE BYRON BAND in 1981.
The line-up for the 'On The Rocks' album comprised of noted guitarist ROBIN GEORGE, bassist Roger Flavell, keyboard player Bob Jackson and drummer John Shearer. His previous act ROUGH DIAMOND had deserted him en masse to create CHAMPION as Byron's drinking got beyond control. THE BYRON BAND's momentum was immediately curtailed when the vocalist collapsed onstage at London's Marquee club.
Years of alcohol abuse had taken its inevitable toll and Byron was advised by doctors in late 1984 that he had seriously damaged his health to the extent that he did not have long to live and David sadly died in February 1985.
THE BYRON BAND guitarist ROBIN GEORGE went on to a solo career as well as having a stint with MAGNUM, forming NOTORIOUS with DIAMOND HEAD vocalist Sean Harris, a brief spell with THIN LIZZY and producing the MARSHALL LAW album 'Powergame'. Drummer John Shearer would later join WOLF and be a founder member of American act HURRICANE.
George struck up another new band project in mid 2005 dubbed DAMAGE CONTROL, this an alliance with UFO, WAYSTED and OZZY OSBOURNE bassist PETE WAY and the veteran figure of AC/DC, URIAH HEEP, ASIA, MANFRED MANN, 100 PROOF and THE FIRM drummer Chris Slade.
