Biography

BRONZ was the Bath based band signed as the flagship to the revived Bronze record label. Originally a 1979 trio of vocalist / bassist Paul Webb, guitarist Chris Goulstone and drummer Carl Matthews, at one point ex-SHY and CHINATOWN drummer Steve Hopgood was also briefly a member in the early days. The sticksman would later journey through PERSIAN RISK, BATTLEZONE, KILLERS and JAGGED EDGE.

With the addition of second guitarist Shaun Kirkpatrick the group secured deal with Bronze, adding ex-MOBY DICK and NIGHTWING vocalist and former milkman MAX BACON as the icing on the cake. The resulting 1984 debut album proved, however, to be an expensive failure. BRONZ fared badly on the touring circuit only completing one ill matched support tour in March to HAWKWIND to coincide with the release of the 'Taken By Storm' album, having previously opened for MAGNUM at the Hammersmith Odeon in London during June 1983 months before acquiring Bacon. The single 'Send Down An Angel', which starred Emma Thompson, enjoyed a modicum of success on MTV.

In February 1985 BRONZ recruited vocalist Ian Baker. Meantime Bacon found post BRONZ success, albeit shortlived, in America with the GTR project, the vocalist working with guitar legends STEVE HOWE and STEVE HACKETT. The demise of the Bronze label signalled the same fate for the band. Kirkpatrick did persevere with the band name for a period, even rehearsing with THIN LIZZY guitarist Scott Gorham at one point, but ultimately BRONZ folded.

With the eventual break up of BRONZ during the later months of 1985 Chris Goulstone formed the female fronted HEADMASTER in 1985. Following a fleeting appearance in JAGGED EDGE Baker formed BLUEPRINT with ex-GRAND PRIX guitarist Mick O'Donahughe and then TAKEN AT THE FLOOD. Drummer Carl Matthews teamed up with MANSFIELD, a short-lived outfit featuring former AIRRACE personnel.

MAX BACON issued a solo album 'The Harder You Fall' in the mid 90s.

BRONZ would reform in 1999 citing a line up of Paul Webb, Chris Goulstone, Shaun Kirkpatrick, Carl Matthews and John Kirkpatrick on bass. This union cut two URIAH HEEP tracks 'All My Life' and 'The Other Side Of Midnight' for the tribute album 'Heepsteria'. Meantime, an album comprising early demos and live tracks dubbed 'Unfinished Business' also surfaced. The March 2003 album 'Bronz Live – Getting Higher' comprised both archive and brand new live recorded material.

BRONZ included a brand new track, entitled 'Fugitive', to the 2004 'Total Metal Attack' NWoBHM era compilation album issued through Old School Records. The band, alongside DIAMOND HEAD, JAGUAR, PRAYING MANTIS and WITCHFYNDE would unite for the 'The 25th Anniversary of NWOBHM' concert on 4th November at the Astoria in London.
