Biography

Taking their name from a phrase in James Joyce's 'Portrait Of The Artist As A Young Man', and featuring ex-HERITAGE and GEDDES AXE guitarist Andy Barrott, the original incarnation of BABY TUCKOO featured vocalist Steve Holton who departed to join CYRKA. Keyboard player Alan Tidswell joined VERITY prior to former OVERDRIVE vocalist Rob Armitage (a man once compared to a 'Kop full of David Coverdales') joining in 1983.

The band's debut single, 'Mony Mony', released on the Albion label, was produced by ex-ARGENT man John Verity and this was soon followed by the 'First Born' album a year later in 1984 through the Ultranoise label. In 1985 BABY TUCKOO signed to the enterprising Music For Nations who subsequently released the band's second album 'Force Majeure' to critical acclaim. The label followed this up with second single 'Rock, Rock' in 1986. The group then recorded a version of 'Tears Of A Clown', a cover of the SMOKEY ROBINSON song, which was produced by Liam Sternberg later the same year. BABY TUCKOO teamed up with Leicester's CHROME MOLLY for a joint headlining tour, supposedly to highlight British talent.

Sadly for the British Rock scene BABY TUCKOO called it a day when, in 1986, Armitage quit to join German Metal band ACCEPT, although he was never to record with the band. After a mere nine month stint with ACCEPT Armitage joined JAGGED EDGE then founded the short-lived PASSION in 1988 before quitting the music business. His former BABY TUCKOO colleague Andy Barrott was to join CHROME MOLLY and then SWAMPWALK.

Post Armitage, BABY TUCKOO briefly employed singer Mick from HIGH AND DRY.
