Biography
A riff driven Punk-Metal studio project founded in Stockholm by ENTOMBED drummer Nicke Andersson (in a frontman capacity) and BACKYARD BABIES man Dregan (a.k.a. Anders Svensson), the duo roped in bassist Kenny and erstwhile CELEBORN drummer Robin (a.k.a. Robert Eriksson and a full time member of SEWER GROOVES) to the outfit. THE HELLACOPTERS concentrate on good time hard Rock n' Roll and the drummer wound up quitting the ENTOMBED in order to fully concentrate on the group. The album 'Supershitty To The Max', arriving in June 1996, would be the first release on the White Jazz label. Japanese editions, on the Toy's Factory imprint, added extra track 'Bullet'. Limited edition vinyl pressing in Europe included 500 in clear vinyl and both white and black vinyl versions with an anchor tattoo logo. The 'Misanthropic High' 7" single, with a B side cover version of THE STOOGES 'I Got A Right' and released by Bad Afro, was recorded in just one day at Sunlight Studios in Stockholm with DISMEMBER's Fred Estby as producer.
In 1997 THE HELLACOPTERS gained the honour of opening for Andersson's musical heroes KISS on the Scandinavian leg of their world tour. By the end of the year the band were touring Europe sharing top billing with their 'brothers in mind' GLUECIFER. The October 1997 album, 'Payin' The Dues', saw a Japanese release via Toy's Factory with an additional track 'Oh Yeah Allright!'. In Europe, White Jazz pressed 2000 in smokey vinyl with other colour variations including purple. A split 7" with ELECTRIC FRANKENSTEIN included a rendition of APRIL STEVENS 'I Want A Lip'. The first pressing would be manufactured in 100 brown, 500 black, 900 purple vinyl with a second pressing of a 1000 in cherry red.
1998 opened in January with a picture disc 7" single, 'Like No Other Man' with a B side rendition of the ROLLING STONES 'Gimmie Shelter', issued on the Flapping Jet label. Chuck Pounder replaced Dregan during 1998 debuting on new tracks recorded for the mainly retrospective 'Disappointment Blues' set. The album included versions of MOTÖRHEAD's 'Speedfreak' as well has takes on songs by SONIC'S RENDEVOUS and RADIO BIRDMAN. The single B side to 'I Only Got The Shakes' saw a version of BLACK SABBATH's 'Evil Woman'. That same year Estrus Records released the 'Looking At Me' 7" single, first pressings manufactured red, black and marble grey vinyl with a subsequent pressing in purple. October 1998's 'Rock & Roll Jihad' split 7" shared with THE NITWITZ would be manufactured in a whole swathe of differing variants, the first vinyl pressing in 2000 black with black cover and silver label. second vinyl 500 transparent, blue cover and red label. third vinyl 500 black, blue cover and red label. fourth vinyl 500 black, red cover and yellow label with the fifth vinyl 500 yellow with red cover on a yellow label.
In 1999 THE HELLACOPTERS revisted their 1997 split album with GLUECIFER with another volume titled 'Respect The Rock America'. The band covered MC5's 'American Ruse', BOB SEGER's 'Her Strut', LYNYRD SKYNYRD's 'Working For MCA'. The 'Grande Rock' album, put out by White Jazz, saw different coloured vinyl editions for seven different countries. In Japan the Toy's Factory licensed CD hosted two extra tracks, 'I Only Got The Shakes' and 'Keepin' On'. That July an extremely rare 7" split single in collaboration with BLÅ TÅGET, 'Disappointment Blues', was made for sale only at THE HELLACOPTERS gig at the Swedish 'Gränslösa' festival.
THE HELLACOPTERS shared a split single of their version of LOVE's 'A House Is Not A Motel' with Australian act THE POWDERMONKEYS, 'Crimson Ballroom' in collaboration with ROCKET FROM THE CRYPT as a 'Gearhead' magazine cover mount and a further 7" with Holland's NITWITZ. A novel approach to the split 7" concept came with an October 1999 union with THE QUADRAJETS. Rather than traditionally tackle one song each, the two bands fused. The song 'Think It Over', credited to the QUADRACOPTERS, featured THE QUADRAJETS plus Nick Royale on guitar and vocals and Robert Dahlqvist on guitar whilst second song, 'I Wasn't Born In A Hallway' as THE HELLAJETS, comprised THE HELLACOPTERS with plus The Fang, The Cheetah and Mr. Hardwick of THE QUADRAJETS.
The 2000 'High Visibility' album scored well for THE HELLACOPTERS, being their best selling effort in their home country yet and landing a gold sales award in the process. A limited edition, double gatefold vinyl version added the extra track 'No Dogs'. Drummer Nicke Royne helped forge the one off side project band SUPERSHIT 666 in 2000 for a self titled album. Joining him in this escapade were BACKYARD BABIES frontman Dregan, Ginger from THE WILDHEARTS and producer Tomas Skogsberg on bass. THE HELLACOPTERS rounded off 2000 by touring Europe with support band THE HIVES.
March of 2001 witnessed another split 7" single, the group covering THE DAMNED's 'Stab Your Back' with ADAM WEST making up the flip side with THE DAMNED's 'Neat, Neat, Neat'. For their 2002 album 'By The Grace Of God' the band lifted the single 'Carry Me Home' in December, the B side of which featured a rendition of RORY GALLAGHER's 'Big Guns'. The album soon delivered the band a second gold record award in Sweden for sales in excess of 30'000 copies.
The Butcher's Hook label put THE HELLACOPTERS on their four way split 10" EP 'St. Valentines Killers' in March 2003, the Swedes donating 'Little Miss Sweetness' alongside songs by fellow collaborators THE CASANOVAS, THE FLAMING SIDEBURNS and THE DATSUNS. That same month Pink Honey Records compiled two MOTÖRHEAD covers by THE HELLACOPTERS, rendering 'Speedfreak', and WEASELFACE on a split 7" single.
THE HELLACOPTERS teamed up with SEPULTURA and DEEP PURPLE for four Kaiser Music Festival Brazilian dates in September of 2003, following these dates with a burst of Australian gigs. Upon their return to Scandinavia the group cut a cover version of 'Pack Of Lies' in homage to THE NOMADS, this track appearing on both a tribute album and a split 7" single. Another interesting slit offering arrived in March of 2004 as THE HELLACOPTERS shared vinyl with ADAM WEST. Issued by People Like You Records the picture disc EP, limited to 1500 copies, saw the band taking on covers of 'I Get A Sensation', originally by ADAM WEST and the Rock n' Roll LARRY WILLIAMS staple 'Boney Maronie'. Meantime, one of ADAM WEST's two tracks would be a rendition of THE HELLACOPTERS own 'Ferrytale'.
The band celebrated their tenth anniversary with a special party gig at the Mondo venue in Stockholm on 4th November, the band members acting as DJs throughout the evening, with live performances from GLUECIFER and THE FLAMING SIDEBURNS. To coincide, Universal Records issued the EP 'Strikes Like Lightning'. A limited edition vinyl version on Sweet Nothing Records came packaged as three 7" singles in a box set.
To round off the year Robert Eriksson formed up with URRKE T & THE MIDLIFE CRISIS, a collaboration between Dregan from BACKYARD BABIES, Urrke T from MARYSLIM and Måns M from THE MAGGOTS. A 7" single, entitled 'Ask Not What You Can Do For Your Country...', recorded in just one day and limited to 2000 copies, arrived in December through Bootleg Booze Records. The three tracks included cover versions of THE USERS 'Sick Of You', WARHEADS 'Center Of Lies' and THE AVENGERS 'The American In Me'.
A 2005 compilation inclusion of note would be the track 'By The Grace Of God' featured on the 'Code Red' album, an exclusive collection given to US Marine Corps soldiers active duty in the Middle East. A new full length album from THE HELLACOPTERS, 'Rock & Roll Is Dead', would be recorded at Atlantis Studios in Stockholm with producer Chips Kiesbye. The first edition of the CD came with a 25 minute documentary of the recording sessions entitled 'Poking At The Stiff'. The LP version, limited to 3000 copies, was pressed in seven different colours: brown, green, white, clear, orange, red and black.
A notable event came in July at the 'Peace And Love' festival in Borlänge, Sweden when ENTOMBED were joined onstage by erstwhile drummer Nicke Andersson as fill in guitarist for Uffe Cederlund, the latter on the road with DISFEAR.
During late 2005 Andersson concocted the deliberatly retro-styled Death Metal combo DEATH BREATH, being joined by frontman Jörgen Sandström, who had previously fronted the Swedish Death Metal act GRAVE, played with Andersson in ENTOMBED as the group's bassist and holds both VICIOUS ART and THE PROJECT HATE credentials, plus guitarist Robert Persson of THUNDER EXPRESS.
US imprint Sacred Heart Recordings issued a vinyl picture disc of 'Rock & Roll Is Dead' in May 2006, this limited edition variant, restricted to 1000 copies, adding two extra songs, 'It Might Mean Something to Yo' and 'Positively So Naïve'. THE HELLACOPTERS, BACKYARD BABIES and MILLENCOLIN teamed up for the 'Where The Action Is' tour of Sweden in August.
What was described as the group's "final" studio album, a collection of covers entitled 'Head Off' produced by Chips Kiesby, was released in April 2008 and entered the Swedish national chart no. 4. THE HELLACOPTERS released a fresh single, 'Darling Darling', on 5th September 2008 with an exclusive B-side 'Baby Come' as a CD-single and on seven-inch vinyl.
What was described as "the last four shows ever" by THE HELLACOPTERS, held on 25th October and 26th October at Debaser Medis in Stockholm, the group playing two shows per day, would be webcast in high definition on MySpace.
