Biography

SINS OF OMISSION, founded in Stockholm in 1996 as TO THE GRIND by ex-members of acts such as BESERK, METEPSYCHOSIS and MOURNFUL, initially comprised of MOURNFUL and WYVERN singer Toni Kocmut, guitarists Martin Persson, citing BERSERK, DISMEMBER and MÖRK GRYNING credits, and Johan Paulsson, bass player Thomas Fällgren and drummer Dennis Ekdahl, the latter a veteran of ATHELA, MOURNFUL and MYSTIC PROPHECY. The idea behind the band was to blend the technicalities of modern Swedish Death Metal with the refinement of traditional Heavy Metal. Both Persson and Ekdahl had also performed as live sessioneers for MÖRK GRYNING in 1996 whilst Persson and Kocmut session on albums by THYRFING. Shortly after formation guitarist Jonas Nilsson and bassist Thomas Fällgren enrolled.

Still billed as TO THE GRIND the band debuted live in April 1997, their opening gig being supported by THYRFING, IN COLD BLOOD and THE MARBLE ICON. Invited to appear on a compilation album, the group cut two songs, 'Burn The Night' and 'Reap The Storm'. However, the album did not materialise and TO THE GRIND utilised these tracks as their first promotional effort. However, Nilsson decamped in the Summer of 1997 and with Kocmut switching to guitar the band operated for a while minus a lead vocalist.

Rebilling themselves as SINS OF OMISSION the group's ad hoc demo received favourable responses back from Nuclear Blast, Earache and Wrong Again records. Eventually the band signed to Black Sun Records to craft the opening album 'The Creation', recorded at Studio Fredman in Gothenburg and engineered and supervised by Fredrik Nordström and Anders Fridén. This effort featured Kocmut on lead vocals. This situation was solved as SINS OF OMISSION added former A CANOUROUS QUINTET and OCTOBER TIDE vocalist Mårten Hansen. Following a brief burst of European gigs in Holland and Belgium Kocmut exited and Mattias Eklund stepped in. The new recruit cited a wealth of underground Metal experience with such acts as MÖRK GRYNING (as 'Avatar'), MORTUM, as 'Mephisto', Death Metallers REPUGNANT, MORTIFER, FIST FIRST, VANISHED, REQUIEM and, as 'Necropounder', drummer for "Crack Metal" band CACHTICE. Drummer Dennis Ekdahl also performed with RAISE HELL whilst Mårten Hansen would front VOTUR.

In February 2001 SINS OF OMISSION recorded their second album, the Pelle Säter and Lasse Lindén engineered 'Flesh On Your Bones', at Studio Underground in Västerås. Later that year the group drafted new drummer Jani Stefanovich from Finnish acts SABAOTH and AM I BLOOD. His tenure lasted until 2003 when he relocated to Finland to found Christian Death Metal band RENASCENT. In 2006 Stefanovich drummed on HILASTHERION's debut album.
