Biography

Stockholm's IN GREY, founded by guitarist Niclas Axelsson, was originally created as the Death Metal band TEARS OF LUNA in 1992 as a trio of Axelsson, bassist Guillaume Le Hucke and drummer Andre B. However, Le Hucke, re-billed as 'Israphael', soon vacated his post to join KATATONIA. Still under this formative title the group, then comprising singer Dennis Liljedahl, guitarist Joakim Bergenvall and drummer Andre Teilman, released two demos, 1994's 'The Journey' and 'Skydancer' in 1995. That same year guitarist Anders Nystrom (a.k.a. Blakkheim) of BLOODBATH, KATATONIA, BEWITCHED, DIABOLICAL MASQUERADE and ANCIENT RITES was inducted. The band adopted the IN GREY title for the 1996 'Time Circles' set. After this session the band went into hiatus as Nystrom prioritised KATATONIA.

IN GREY made a return in 1998, Liljedahl, Axelsson, guitarist Joakim Luleå and drummer Dennis Starkeberg issuing a 1999 demo 'Seasons Change' cut at Subsonic Studios. The band, borrowing ex-EYEKON and KATATONIA bassist Mikael Oretoft, put in their debut gig at the Stålverket festival.

The next set of recordings, 2000's 'Mask', featuring Johan Erikson on bass, saw a radical shift into more subdued, Gothic areas, this trend being continued with the 2001 'Above' demo and, after enrolling FLAGELLATION's Per Lindström on bass guitar, the 2003 album 'Sulphar Trees'. That same year FLAGELLATION's Daniel Cannerfelt would be installed on second guitar. It seems Elvis Aleman was also briefly positioned on guitar.

The 2004 version of IN GREY had Axelsson and Starkeberg being joined by new recruits singer Joakim Croneström, guitarist Igor Jevtic and RISING SHADOWS, FLAGELLATION, ANIMA MORTE and GOATSODOMIZER keyboard player Fredrik Klingwall. This line-up cut the four song demo 'MMIV'. The band parted ways with Klingwall in November 2005.

FREDRIK KLINGWALL departed to join Progressive Metal band LOCH VOSTOK in December 2005 and issued Industrial solo album 'Entrance' in 2006. IN GREY lost the services of bassist Per Lindström in April. Both Klingwall and Lindström joined the ranks of MACHINERY in 2006.
