Biography

Hailing from Tumba, a suburb of Stockholm, AMON AMARTH, titled after the Mount Doom of J.R.R. Tolkien's 'Lord of the Rings' trilogy, trace their roots back to 1992, formatively taking the title SCUM for a 1991 demo. Purveyors of quality, crushing Death Metal, AMON AMARTH's particular brand of aggression is brazenly stained with Norse mythology and the Viking sagas.

Once SCUM folded, the musicians regrouped, originally adopting the name NIFELHEIM before discovering another Swedish act holding prior claim. AMON AMARTH at this stage involved growler Johan Hegg, guitarists Olavi Mikkonen and Anders Hansson, with Nico Kaukinen on drums. The band would also feature erstwhile ETERNAL OATH bassist Ted Lundström. It would be the latter who suggested the AMON AMARTH moniker.

The unit's first available recording was to have been 1993's 'Thor Arise' demo, constructed at Lagret Studio and which featured a rendition of the BLACK SABBATH anthem 'Sabbath Bloody Sabbath', though this was withheld. It was to be a full year before second demo, 1994's 'The Arrival Of The Fimbul Winter', made it onto the tape trading scene leading to a deal with Singapore based label Pulverised Records.

Following the release of supremely melodic, yet blistering debut 'Sorrow Throughout The Nine Worlds' mini-album, produced by HYPOCRISY's Peter Tägtgren, in April 1996 drummer Nico Kaukinen opted out to be replaced by Martin López. This first release caused some degree of controversy when journalists pointed out that the flaming "sun-cross" on the cover art was unfortunately close to a recognised racist symbol. AMON AMARTH had merely chosen the device because of its Viking origins but would have to deflect questioning on this symbology. Fortunately, positive press resulting from the music contained on 'Sorrow Throughout The Nine Worlds' scored the band a deal closer to home as the German branch of Metal Blade snapped the band up.

AMON AMARTH's sophomore release, February 1998's thundering 'Once Sent From The Golden Hall', was again produced by Peter Tägtgren, who also commandeered September 1999's 'The Avenger'. However, a change in line-up would see Anders Hansson, opting out immediately before a June 1998 European tour aligned with DEICIDE, SIX FEET UNDER and BRUTAL TRUTH, superseded by Johan Söderberg prior to these sessions. New drummer Fredrik Andersson, also engaged with A CANOROUS QUINTET and ALLEGIANCE, was inducted once these dates had concluded/

AMON AMARTH, supported by PURGATORY, undertook a tour of Germany in December 2000. A new album, 'The Crusher', featuring a re-recorded 'Risen From The Sea' originally found on the band's debut demo, would arrive in May 2001. Limited edition digipacks hosted a cover rendition of POSSESSED's 'Eyes Of Horror'. That year Fredrik Andersson launched a side venture bearing the title CURRICULUM MORTIS, this project also featuring Leo Pignon of A CANOROUS QUINTET on guitar and Mattias Leinikka from GUIDANCE OF SIN on vocals.

After MARDUK and VADER co-headlined gigs in Europe, a projected US tour was cancelled in the wake of the New York World Trade Center disasters. North American shows were scheduled in again for January 2002 but headline act MARDUK withdrew, leaving AMON AMARTH to persevere on their own then returning to hit Europe flanking VOMITORY in April. Following AMON AMARTH's appearance at the August 2002 'Wacken Open Air' festival in Germany the band went straight into the recording studio to cut a brand new album 'Versus The World'. Limited "Viking" editions of this album came with a bonus CD comprising the band's initial demo recordings, the 'Sorrow Throughout The Nine Worlds' tracks plus a German language version of 'Victorious March' entitled 'Siegreicher Marsch'.

The band was due to form up part of the much vaunted HALFORD spearheaded 'Metal Gods' 2003 North American tour but this ambitious run of dates collapsed after just a handful of gigs. Nevertheless, the band's live schedule intensified with September North American dates dubbed 'The Art Of Noise 2'. This run of shows saw the band allied with KREATOR, VADER, NILE and GOATWHORE. The band would be confirmed as headliners for the 'X-Mass Festivals' European tour commencing in London on December 7th, heading up a strong billing incorporating DESTRUCTION, DEICIDE, NILE, GRAVEWORM, DEW-SCENTED, MISERY INDEX and DISBELIEF.

Andersson started up a fresh project band in 2003, LAID TO REST being a Death / Thrash Metal project featuring KAPUT! and ORCHARDS OF ODENWRATH guitarist Zack Z. In 2004 AMON AMARTH would donate their rendition of 'The Eyes Of Horror' to the 'Seven Gates Of Horror' tribute album assembled by the Dutch Karmaggedon Media label in homage to pioneering Bay Area Thrash act POSSESSED.

AMON AMARTH announced the concept behind their 2004 studio album 'Fate Of Norns' as referring to "the three Norns - or "goddesses of fate" - Urd, Skuld and Verdandi who in Scandinavian mythology sits at the root of Yggdrasil - the world tree - weaving the fate of every man."

An incentive for fans to attend German pre-release shows in Bochum and Ludwigsburg in September came in the form of a taster album shared with FRAGMENTS OF UNBECOMING, DISILLUSION and IMPIOUS. Initial, limited edition copies of the regular album came with a bonus DVD, 'Live at Grand Rokk', a forty five minute disc comprising three camera video footage of AMON AMARTH performing live in Reykjavik, Iceland on 5th March, 2004.

The band united with IMPIOUS and German Death Metal crew DISILLUSION for October European tour dates. Dates were announced alongside CANNIBAL CORPSE too, but the band withdrew, claiming it was "economically impossible". Meantime, 'Fate Of Norns' scored well on the European charts, hitting number 31 in Germany and number 56 in Austria. AMON AMARTH toured Mexico in February 2005 with support from EVILHEART and MEN AT ARMS. European Summer festivals would be punctuated by a short Euro tour partnered with CATARACT and IMPIOUS.

In May 2006 AMON AMARTH entered Fascination Street studios in ?rebro to commence work on a sixth album, 'With Oden On Our Side', with producer Jens Bogren. The album entered the German national chart at number 21, the highest chart entry in Germany of any band on the Metal Blade roster.

The group teamed up with WINTERSUN and TYR for a European tour, covering Germany, Italy, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, France, the UK, Holland, Belgium, Sweden and Norway, beginning in early November. The band teamed up with GOJIRA, SANCTITY and headliners CHILDREN OF BODOM for a North American tour in December.

AMON AMARTH set up UK dates aligned with FINNTROLL and OCTAVIA SPERATI for April 2007. Summer US dates throughout July and August had the band involved in the gargantuan 'Sounds Of The Underground' touring festival accompanied by JOB FOR A COWBOY, NECRO, GWAR, CHIMAIRA, DARKEST HOUR, THE ACACIA STRAIN, HEAVY HEAVY LOW LOW, GOATWHORE, THE NUMBER TWELVE LOOKS LIKE YOU, THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA, THIS IS HELL and EVERY TIME I DIE amongst others. The group acted as direct support to DIMMU BORGIR's 'The Invaluable Darkness Tour 2007' in October and November.

AMON AMARTH entered Fascination Street Studio in Örebro, Sweden on May 1st 2008 to begin recording its seventh full-length album for a late 2008 release via Metal Blade Records. In support of the album, Metal Blade Records commissioned artist Lucio Parrillo to draw up an eight-page AMON AMARTH comic. The album featured several high-profile guest appearances including ENTOMBED singer L.G. Petrov on 'Guardians Of Asgaard', CHILDREN OF BODOM guitarist Roope Latvala with a guitar solo on the track 'Twilight Of The Thunder God' and APOCALYPTICA with a guest appearance on 'Live For The Kill'.

'Twilight Of The Thunder God' sold more than 11,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at no. 48 on The Billboard 200 chart. A promotional video for the title track off 'Twilight Of The Thunder God' was filmed on the historical Viking site, Jomsborg, home of the Jomsvikings in Wolin, Poland, with the Polish team Group 13 and director Dariusz Szermanowicz.

AMON AMARTH embarked on a full European headlining tour in March 2009, hitting the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, UK, France, Czech Republic, Italy, Austria and Hungary. Support on the "Full Of Hate 2009" trek came from OBITUARY, LEGION OF THE DAMNED and KEEP OF KALESSIN

Metal Blade Records re-issued 'The Avenger' album as a double-popup-digipack on 25th May 2009 containing two discs. Disc one featured the entire original 'The Avenger' album in remastered format plus the bonus track 'Thor Arise'. The second disc hosted a live recording of the show AMON AMARTH played on 29th December 2008 in Bochum, Germany where teh band performed the album in its entirety.

The band played the THIN LIZZY, SAXON, UFO, MOTÖRHEAD and HEAVEN AND HELL headlined August 2009 'Wacken Open Air' festival in Germany. The group also featured on the 'Summer Breeze' festival billing in August held in Dinkelsbühl, Germany.
