Biography
Female fronted Stockholm based Metal act, incorporating erstwhile personnel from MOURNING SIGN, that employ both trad Heavy Metal styles combined with the aggression of Death Metal. The band was formulated by guitarists Kari Kainulainen and Ronnie Backlund, shortly after adding bass player Mikael Andersson and singer Johanna De Pierre. The title of AMARAN was decided upon in January of 2001, a debut demo session arriving in April. AMARAN would complete their line-up with the inclusion of Robin Bergh on drums.
The French Listenable label picked up the band for an inaugural album, 'A World Depraved', released in 2002. In early 2003 the band announced a title of 'Pristine In Bondage' for a second outing, recorded at Studio Underground in VästerÃ¥s, Sweden. Bassist Mikael Andersson exited in May, being swiftly replaced by Ronnie BergerstÃ¥hl, known previously for his role as drummer with JULIE LAUGHS NO MORE. In October that same year BergerstÃ¥hl also teamed up with MYNJUN and arch Black-Death Metal act CENTINEX as their new drummer.
European package tour dates for January of 2004 found the group in league with with AFTER FOREVER, DARK MOOR and French veterans NIGHTMARE. However, guitarist Ronnie Backlund fractured his right arm just upfront of these gigs and was forced to sit out the dates. Esa Orjatsalo of Finnish band DREAMTALE stepped in as substitute. Next in line for enrollment would be drummer Pär Hjulström, taking over percussion duties for the band's '2000 Decibel' festival appearance in May. Ex-drummer Robin Bergh joined melodic Metal band CELLOUT. In March of 2004 Pär Hjulström, retaining his position with AMARAN, also enrolled himself into Progressive Death Metal band ATHELA and would also join MARAMON. Leading up to the band's appearance the the October 'Barlo' festival in Holland AMARAN united with KATATONIA for a run of Scandinavian and European gigs.
In November guitarist Kari Kainulainen quit, announcing his frustration at the band's lack of progress. He would concentrate his efforts on a new outfit billed SIBLIANCE. Meantime, Ronnie Bergerståhl joined WORLD BELOW in December. AMARAN lost the services of Johanna De Pierre in July 2005. As the year closed, so did the lifespan of AMARAN, the band announcing during late December "This year comes to an end and we are sad to say that AMARAN does the same."
