Biography

Stockholm's ABSTRAKT ALGEBRA was assembled as more of an experimental studio project by bassist Leif Edling after the demise of the critically acclaimed CANDLEMASS in 1993, the man roped in a few friends and acquaintances including ex-HEXENHAUS guitarist Mike Wead. Whilst vocalist Mats Levén boasts an impressive pedigree, including stints with CAPRICORN, SWEDISH EROTICA and TREAT, guitarist Simon Johansson played simultaneously for FIFTH REASON. Drummer Jejo Perkovitch also had other engagements as a member of Punk rockers BRICK.

Combining classic Metallic riffs with a fairly Industrial use of sampling and keyboard work, Edling covered ground in ABSTRAKT ALGEBRA that he daren't not have tried within the confines of CANDLEMASS. The album arrived in February 1995, with Zero Corporation issuing 'Abstrakt Algebra' in Japan in March, although the group only managed a handful of gigs in their native Sweden towards the end of the year.

Johansson would join MEMORY GARDEN during 1996. After a stint fronting EYEBALL, Levén teamed up with YNGWIE MALMSTEEN in 1997 for his 'Face The Animal' record.

Although intending to record a second ABSTRAKT ALGEBRA album, Edling felt that the new material was heading in a similar direction to CANDLEMASS, so the bassist opted to resurrect his former band to complete the material. However, even with a full blown CANDLEMASS reformation underway the pairing of Edling and Leven would reunite forging another project band billed as KRUX and having laid down a debut album for 2002 release through the Mascot label. This new venture also saw contributions from the ENTOMBED rhythm section of drummer Peter Stjärnvind and bassist Jörgen Sandstrom, although the latter would switch to guitar. Other guitarists involved in the sessions included Nicko Elgstrand of TERRA FIRMA and Fredrik Åkesson from TALISMAN.

In early 2006 it was learned that Mats Levén was working up a band project with an esteemed roster of players dubbed FATAL FORCE. This unit comprised Danish guitarist TORBEN ENEVOLDSEN and the XSAVIOR, MIND'S EYE, SPEEDY GONZALES, FARO and PHILIP BARDOWELL credited drummer Daniel Flores. A self-titled, Tommy Hansen produced debut album emerged in April via MTM Music.

In February 2007 it was announced that Mike Wead had joined forces with a brand new, melodic Death Metal inclined project called KRYPTILLUSION. Kristofer Nilsson of UNDIVINE handled lead vocals whilst Stefan Westerberg, of IN THY DREAMS, STEEL ATTACK, WORLD BELOW, ASPERITY and CARNAL FORGE, featured on drums and Fredrik Groth from THE STORYTELLER assumed bass duties. Levén joined CANDLEMASS onstage for their 20th anniversary concert at Stockholm's Kolingsborg on March 31st, performing the song 'Black Dwarf'.
