EXCESSUM was forged in Sotenäs / Uddevalla during December of 2001 at the hands of guitarist Daniel Contagion and keyboard player Arvid Hammar. The group, enrolling guitarist Erik Dahlström and Pontus Norman on the drums, rehearsed throughout 2002 but would then fold, only to recommence activities the following year with Kaj Palm of DESCENDING, RETARD, MATRICIDE (as 'Gimbrynjer') and STONEBITCH on bass guitar for recording of the 'Oblivion' sessions. Contagion would also be active as a member of another Black Metal combo, HUMAN DEATH.

Signing to the French label Aura Mystique Productions EXCESSUM readied an album release for 2004. By this juncture Andreas Hedström, of RETARD, DESCENDING and GRIEF OF EMERALD repute, had taken the bass position.
