Biography

Ȫrebro retro Metal band WOLF is proudly steeped in eighties influences. Their eponymous April 2000 debut for the No Fashion life would be recorded by a trio of vocalist / guitarist Niklas Stålvind, bass guitarist Mikael Goding and drummer Daniel Bergkvist, this unit gelling from a start in 1995 by the erstwhile PROWLER pairing of Olsson and Goding, recording a first two song demo comprising 'Devil Eyes' / 'Damnation' plus 1996 set of 'The Hills Have Eyes' / PAT BENATAR's 'Hell Is For Children', with Bergkvist of THE KILLERS enrolling in 1997. Early single recordings emerged on the Beast label, 'The Howling Scares Me To Death' in August 1999 and 'In The Shadow Of Steel' in November, did prompting the interest of No Fashion. The April 2000 'Wolf' album, produced by HYPOCRISY mainman Peter Tägtgren, immediately set the band apart from the pack, with many critics revelling in its unashamed NWoBHM influences. A promotional video for the track 'Moonlight' also scored for the band on the Swedish 'Voxpop' TV programme.

They would augment their sound with the addition of second guitarist Henrik Johansson for the August 2001 EP 'Moonlight' but then substituted this latest candidate with Johan 'Blade' Bülow, previously with DREAMGOD and FALLEN ANGEL, for the second album. The 2002 WOLF outing 'Black Wings', once again produced by Peter Tägtgren, included a cover version of MERCYFUL FATE's 'A Dangerous Meeting'. International licensing proved valuable for the band as Hellion Records took the album on for Brazil whilst Irond issued the record in Russia. In August 2002 Johan Bülow, exiting to forge CHAIN OF HATE, was replaced by the DECAMERON and SEVENTH ONE credited Johannes Losback. In December the British Rage Of Achilles label issued a limited edition 7" single comprising 'Night Stalker' and a rendition of SLAYER's 'Die By The Sword'.

WOLF would lend support to SAXON's 'Heavy Metal Thunder' January 2003 European tour alongside NOCTURNAL RITES and EVIDENCE ONE. The band also hit North America, performing at the 'BWBK Six Pack Weekend' festival in Cleveland during June.

During November WOLF laid down recordings at Abyss Studios for a second Peter Tägtgren produced effort entitled 'Evil Star'. This outing, released in February of 2004, included cover versions of '(Don't Fear) The Reaper' originally by BLUE ÖYSTER CULT, SLAYER's 'Die By The Sword' and the RAMONES 'I'm Not Afraid Of Life'. A promotional video for the track 'Wolf's Blood' preceded the album. For 2004's 'Evil Star' the band signed a European deal with Germany's Massacre Records and secured a North American release through Prosthetic Records.

WOLF performed an ununusual concert dubbed the '34'000 Ton Metal Cruise' on 25th September, performing onbard the Münchenbryggeriet car ferry in Stockholm, Sweden alongside TANKARD, AMON AMARTH, HYPOCRISY, TAD MOROSE, STORMWARRIOR and SKYCLAD.

In 2005 the 'Evil Star' album was given a vinyl release through Immortal Vinyl Records as a limited edition three sided package in gatefold cover and pressed on white/black marbled vinyl. Limited to just 500 copies the album also added a bonus track 'Déjà Vu'. WOLF signed a new record contract with Century Media Records for a 2006 album. The band entered Studio Fredman in Gothenburg during June with producer Fredrik Nordström to begin recording their fourth album 'The Black Flame'.

WOLF put in German dates in December backing TRIVIUM and DEW-SCENTED. Scandinavian concerts in April and March 2007 was to see the band opening for KREATOR and CELTIC FROST. However, the group withdrew, explaining "Niklas Stålvind has got an infection on the vocal chords and must keep quiet for at least a few weeks to avoid serious damage to his voice." WOLF got back into action with UK concerts in May backing MUNICIPAL WASTE and THE HAUNTED.

In 2008 the band covered MOONSPELL's 'Alma Mater' for inclusion on the Century Media artist compilation 'Covering 20 Years Of Extremes'. This double CD set comprised Century Media acts paying home to their stable mates.

The group played the 'Muskelrock' festival on 13th June 2009 in Tyrolen, outside Växjö, sharing the stage with SPICE AND THE RJ BAND, AXEWITCH, ABRAMIS BRAMA, CAULDRON, SOLID GROUND, BACKDRAFT, BULLET, THOR, THE DEVIL'S BLOOD and HELVETETS PORT.
