NECROMICON opened proceedings with the January 1994 demo 'When The Sun Turns Black'. The band had formed a year earlier billed as LEPRACHAUN, founded by guitarist Niklas Sundqvist also a member of MORTHIRIM and going by the later ego of 'Good 'Ol Nick' with HELLMASKER, drummer Robert Sundelin and Henrik Åberg with vocalist Daniel Björkman subsequently bringing the unit up to full strength. Following this inaugural tape bass player Hendrick took over guitar duties and Jonas Mejfeldt filled the four string position. A further demo 'Through The Gates Of Grief' was cut in July of 1994 before Hendrick's departure. Mejfeldt moved over to guitar whilst Patrick Sundqvist, also known for his work with DARKEST SEASON and as HELLMASKER frontman 'Hellviz', joined on bass. NECROMICON also augmented their sound with the inclusion of keyboard player Roger Johansson.

After a string of live gigs Mejfeldt was to exit due to family commitments. NECROMICON would sign up with the French label Impure Creations Records for an intended split album. Five tracks were duly recorded in February of 1995 but that August three more were added to enable a full length release. After the issue of the April 1996 debut album 'Realm Of Silence' new guitarist Stefan Lundgren joined the band. NECROMICON next struck a deal with the Dutch label Hammerheart Records. Female singer Sara Näsvall was enrolled in 1997 and would feature on the follow up 'Sightveiler' album. That year she would be superseded by Ann Zofie Elert. The band underwent a significant membership shuffle as Björkman, Sundelin and Johannson backed out. Filling the vocal vacancies would be TWILIGHT singer Kai Jaakola whilst Alzamon, a.k.a. Tomas Asklund of DARK FUNERAL repute, manned the drums.

In early 2000 Stefan Lundgren, maintaining his NECROMICON ties, united with DAWN. Tomas Asklund of DAWN returned the favour by aiding on session drums for the NECROMICON album 'Peccata Mundi'. Following the release of this album NECROMICON announced that they were in hiatus. NECROMICON member Baron De Samedi (Jonas?) would later join GATES OF ISHTAR before founding BATTLELUST. Lundgren operates the Doom styled SOBRE NOCTURNE, issuing the 'Serpentine Dreamweaver' album in early 2001.
