Biography

A stoic Kungsangen based Death Metal band that not only has defied genre stereotypes by maintaining a relatively solid line-up but stuck true to their convictions with each successive album release. UNLEASHED, "Lords of the E chords", enhance their material with ancestral themes and Viking mythology. Featuring ex-NIHILIST guitarist Johnny Hedlund, UNLEASHED recorded demos in 1990 titled 'The Utter Dark' in March and September's '...Revenge' that soon sold out, prompting a deal with Germany's Century Media Records. The group roster saw Hedlund ranked alongside erstwhile DISMEMBER frontman Robert Sennebäck, guitarist Fredrik Lindgren with Anders Schultz on drums. However, Sennebäck rejoined DISMEMBER shortly afterward, leaving Hedlund to take over microphone duties.

Two now rare 7" singles, October 1990's '...Revenge' through CBR Records plus the 'And The Laughter Has Died' EP of 1991, were issued before the group debuted proper with the 'Where No Life Dwells' album in May 1991. Produced by DESPAIR and GRIP INC. guitarist Waldemar Sorychta, the album had been recorded at the Woodhouse Studios in Dortmund, Germany that April. UNLEASHED toured Europe and America during the year as support to MORBID ANGEL.

Returning in May 1992 with 'Shadows In The Deep', again using Waldemar Sorychta as producer and featuring a cover of VENOM's 'Countess Bathory', UNLEASHED toured hard once more to promote the album, including a European headline tour with support acts TIAMAT and SAMAEL before American shows with CANNIBAL CORPSE. Unbeknownst to the band, the group's music, and in particular the album track 'Onward Into Countless Battles', had an influence on the most unexpected of major acts - NIRVANA. Many years later drummer Dave Grohl admitted NIRVANA had re-worked the song to their own ends but felt it too close to the UNLEASHED original to pass off.

The group's third album, October 1993's 'Across The Open Sea', found the band lyrically delving deep into Scandinavian history although oddly it is also notable for including a cover of JUDAS PRIEST's 'Breaking The Law'. UNLEASHED cut a live album during 1993, although the recordings were initially released as a bootleg prior to the band responding by issuing the 'Live in Vienna' album the following year. In addition to his work in UNLEASHED guitarist Fredrik Lindgren was also an member of Punk outfit LOUD PIPES billing himself 'Freddy Eugene'. Lindgren, his last work with UNLEASHED being the February 1995 'Victory' album, created Stoner Metal act TERRA FIRMA in 1999 with COUNT RAVEN vocalist Christian Linderson for an eponymous album. A double live collection, 'Eastern Blood â?? Hail To Poland', was delivered in November 1996. Lindgren's place had been taken by Fredrik Folkare for June 1997's 'Warrior' opus.

In October of 2002 UNLEASHED, and in particular Johnny Hedlund, had to contend with rumours that the band pursued extreme right wing 'Nazi' politics. Apparently Dave Grohl of FOO FIGHTERS fame had considered Hedlund for inclusion on his extreme Metal PROBOT project until he was advised of the singer's supposed fascist leanings. Hedlund was quick to deny the claims branding them as false and stating "UNLEASHED praises nature, beast and man. Man....regardless of background, place of birth or color of the skin".

UNLEASHED marked a return in August 2002 with the 'Hell's Unleashed' album. They would follow up in July of 2004 with 'Sworn Allegiance', recorded and mixed by Fredrik Folkare at Chrome Studios and mastered by Peter In de Betou of Tailor Maid Productions. The band promoted this release by teaming up with IN BATTLE and YATTERING for a European tour commencing in late November. Anders Schultz featured as backing vocalist on THE PROJECT HATE's 2005 album ''Armageddon March Eternal (Symphonies Of Slit Wrists)'. UNLEASHED filmed their 1st July performances at the 'With Full Force' festival in Leipzig and August 'Up From The Ground' festival in Gemünden, Germany for DVD release. During November Fredrik Folkare took time out to engineer album sessions for NECROPHOBIC.

The band announced a touring partnership as part of the December 2005 'X-Mass' festivals in Europe ranked alongside recently resurrected UK Thrashers ONSLAUGHT, EXODUS, KATAKLYSM, OCCULT, BEHEMOTH, and PRIMORDIAL.

To perform at the 'Metalmania' festival in Katowice, Poland in March 2006 the group drafted INCARDINE drummer Jonas Tyskhagen as a temporary replacement for Anders Schultz, who had suffered a lung-collapse. UNLEASHED announced in July they has signed with the German SPV Steamhammer label for new studio album 'Midvinterblot'.

Tyskhagen again sessioned for an appearance at the 'Hellflame' festival on September 2nd in Osnabrück, Germany. European show announced for November, dubbed the "Masters Of Death", had the band lined up with a supremely heavyweight Scandinavian cast of DISMEMBER, ENTOMBED and GRAVE.

UNLEASHED was back out on the European touring circuit in early May 2007, heading up the 'Midvinterblot European Tour Part II' dates backed by KATAKLYSM and BELPHEGOR then ARKHON INFAUSTUS.

UNLEASHED's ninth full-length album, 'Hammer Battalion', was released in June 2008 via Steamhammer Records. Produced by the band's guitarist Fredrik Folkare, 'Hammer Battalion' was described by the band as taking "a battle-hardened axe to the misguided concepts of self-subjugation, transparent corruption and unneeded suffering in the name of religious figureheads and provides a perfect link between the ancient struggles of their Nordic forefathers and the ills of our modern society". To promote this opus, UNLEASHED embarked on the 'Hammer Battalion Europe 2008' headlining tour in November with support from KRISIUN and ONE MAN ARMY AND THE UNDEAD QUARTET.

In late 2008 ex-guitarist Freddie Eugene announced he had joined forces with ex-TERRA FIRMA bassist Izmo Ledderfejs and former BLACKSHINE axeman Stabel Miserabel in a new project branded ATLANTIC TIDE
