Gothenburg's DIABOLIQUE is the brainchild of DECOLLATION, GROTESQUE and LIERS IN WAIT founder Kristian Wåhlin. As a drummer for DECOLLATION Wåhlin went under the pseudonym of 'Chris Steele'. Guitarist Johan Österberg is also ex-DECOLLATION, where he went by the title 'John Lesley'. Drummer Hans Nilsson is another LIERS IN WAIT member and also has credits with LUCIFERION, CRYSTAL AGE, THE GREAT DECEIVER and DIMENSION ZERO. Bassist Bino Carlsson is a SÉANCE veteran.

The band started operations in the traditional Death Metal mould but would pursue more atmospheric, Gothique soundscapes with each successive recording. French label Listenable issued the 1996 EP 'The Diabolique' as their opening gambit. The debut album, 1997's 'The Wedding Grotesque' released on Black Sun Records, was produced by KING DIAMOND's Andy La Rocque. DIABOLIQUE's album run continued with 'The Black Flower' in 1999, 'Butterflies' in 2000 through Necropolis Records and the almost fully Electro 'The Green Goddess' in 2001.

Wåhlin also goes under the pseudonym of Necrolord as cover artist for many Black Metal bands, executing such memorable sleeve designs as AT THE GATES 'Slaughter Of The Soul', EMPEROR's 'In The Nightside Eclipse', BATHORY's 'Blood On Ice', DARK TRANQUILLITY's 'The Gallery', DISMEMBER's 'Massive Killing Capacity' amongst many others.
