Biography
Borås outfit CEMETARY's original 1989 line-up comprised vocalist/guitarist Matthias Lodmalm, drummer Juha Sievers and bassist Zrinko Culjak. The group's first demo, recorded over two days at Sunlight Studio with producer Tomas Skogsberg and issued in April 1991, was titled 'Incarnation Of Morbidity' followed by October's 'Articulus Mortis', these sessions setting up sufficient interest at label level to prompt Black Mark to sign the group to an album deal. Debut product arrived in June 1992 in the shape of 'An Evil Shade Of Grey' on the Black Mark Production label.
CEMETARY issued a second album, the Tomas Skogsberg and Lars Linden co-produced 'Godless Beauty' in October 1993. Band roster for this undertaking saw Mathias Lodmalm joined by bassist Zrinko Culjak, rhythm guitarist Anton Hedberg and drummer Juha Sievers.
A third opus, 'Black Vanity' issued in October 1994, saw the arrival of ex-DESECRATOR man Markus Nordberg on drums, CEREMONIAL OATH and DESECRATOR man Anders Iwers on guitar with Thomas Jofesson on bass in a major re-shuffle. Helena Ohberg provided female vocals whilst THERION's Christofer Johnsson donated a guitar solo to 'Ebony Rain'. 'Black Vanity', laid down at Montezuma Recording in Stockholm, was a self-produced endeavour of Lodmalm. The group would promptly tour Europe in early 1995, supporting BOLT THROWER. The 'Sundown' album emerged in February 1996.
By March 1997's highly Gothic influenced 'Last Confession' CEMETARY had, in effect, become a solo vehicle for Lodmalm although he was also diverting his efforts to new act SUNDOWN. Black Mark Production put out the May 1998 compilation 'Sweetest Tragedies' to mark the closure of this chapter. Iwers subsequently enrolled into the ranks of TIAMAT. With SUNDOWN's demise in 2000 Lodmalm resurrected the band under the new title of CEMETARY 1213 for the album 'The Beast Divine' for Century Media Records. In January the following year Mathias Lodmalm revealed he had activated an Electronica project SP3(TRA to record the ' Digital Neon' project. He would, under the pseudonym 'Alpha Domain', undertake touring as a DJ on the German club circuit. A "farewell" CEMETARY EP dubbed '1213 Eternal' was projected.
Back under the CEMETARY branding, the group returned with a March 2005 album 'Phantasma', again for Black Mark Production. Lodmalm quickly revealed further CEMETARY recordings, dubbed 'Burial Theme', were under way. However, in May 2006 Lodmalm then renounced all association with Metal, stating " I've had enough of the people I do business with and the relationship with them has basically killed off the little inspiration I had left to do anything more connected with this whole thing". He duly fired up Electro venture THE DISTANT WAKE.
