Biography
WOLFGANG is a massively successful Heavy, Progressive Rock act. WOLFGANG members operated a variety of acts antecedent to the band's mid nineties formation with drummer Leslie 'Wolf' Gemora involved with DEF LEPPARD covers band HYSTERIA, vocalist Sebastian 'Basti' Artadi fronting SIN CITY, another covers act, and bassist Ramon 'Mon' Legaspi involved with MARIYA'S MISTRESS and RUNAWAY BOYS. Guitarist Manuel Legarda had returned to the Philippines from living as a student at St. Louis University in Madrid. Prior to the band locating Legaspi they had already been through a number of short term bassists including their first candidate John Templo and Angelo of RIZAL UNDERGROUND.
The group's early club shows would be founded on BLACK SABBATH and BAD COMPANY covers but a decision to tackle original material put the band into the recording studio. WOLFGANG's two song demo of 'Darkness Fell' and 'Left Alone' elicited strong radio response. The band signed with Def Tone, a label of local independent Ivory Records, and debuted with an eponymous album in 1995. At the 1995 NU107 Rock Awards, the country's premier Rock awards show, Artadi was nominated for 'Vocalist of the Year', Gemora for 'Drummer of the Year' and Legarda for 'Guitarist of the Year'. The band was nominated for both 'Artist of the Year' and 'Best Live Act'. Legarda was awarded co-winner for 'Guitarist of the Year'.
The overwhelming response to the first offering was strong enough to gain a major label deal with Epic Records for the follow up Perf de Castro produced 'Semenelin'. Epic Records faith in their new signing extended to a marketing budget that saw the single 'Roadworthy Man' clad in no less than eight different sleeves. Incredibly this opus would score double platinum status in their homeland, selling over 80,000 copies. Once again WOLFGANG ruled over the NU107 Rock Awards in 1996, 'Semenelin' being named 'Album of the Year', Artadi winning 'Vocalist of the Year', Gemora taking the 'Drummer of the Year' honours whilst the band was named 'Artist of the Year' and 'Best Live Performer'. 'Semenelin' was issued in the United States as an all English language version in March of 1997, two songs originally performed in Tagalog, the Philippines' national language, being re-recorded in English. Notable gigs in support of the record came as WOLFGANG performed to 35,000 people at the 'Sinulog' festival and opened for METALLICA's 1996 Manilla gig.
The conceptual 'Wurm' arrived in 1997, this outing weaving a mythic tale around the character of Aldebaraan achieving platinum status. The album was nominated at the 1998 NU107 Rock Awards for 'Album of the Year', which also saw Artadi winning his second 'Vocalist of the Year' award and Gemora scooping his second 'Drummer of the Year accolade, while the band took the prestigious honours for 'Listener's Choice' and 'Artist of the Year'. To further promote the album WOLFGANG would perform in Japan on a number of showcase gigs.
The band released 'Serve In Silence', featuring a Russian propaganda art album cover, during March of 1999. Featured once again at the 1999 NU107 Rock Awards, WOLFGANG would be tipped for 'Album of the Year' as well as for 'Best Album Packaging'. The group was nominated for 'Artist/Band of the Year', and the individual band members were nominated for individual awards: Basti Artadi for 'Vocalist of the Year', Manuel Legarda for 'Guitarist of the Year', Mon Legaspi for 'Bassist of the Year', and Wolf Gemora for 'Drummer of the Year'. The band was also tipped for 'Producer of the year'. The album duly tied for first place for 'Album of the Year' with Basti Artadi landing the 'Vocalist of the Year' yet again, his third overall win in this category. WOLFGANG also won the 'Listener's Choice' award.
Rather oddly for a band of such status, WOLFGANG featured alongside three other Sony Music Entertainment artists on the February 2000 live album 'Soundcheck: The Live Recordings'. A full blown live acoustic set, 'Acoustica 9/30/2000' featuring RAZORBACK guitarist David Aguirre as guest, was delivered later that year. Basti Artadi won the 'Vocalist of the year' honours once more.
Aiming to spread their reach internationally, WOLFGANG compiled an April 2001 collection entitled 'Volume' for distribution throughout Tower Records stores in the US and Australia. That same year Basti Artadi involved himself in the 'Brain Salad' project, a side endeavour in iunion with RAZORBACK members. WOLFGANG issued the double album set 'Black Mantra' in August of 2001. The second disc of this package, a live session, comprised cover renditions of songs by artists such as FREE, the ROLLING STONES, JIMI HENDRIX, THE BEATLES, RAZORBACK, LED ZEPPELIN and THE POLICE.
During 2002 Legarda, Legaspi and Gemora, in alliance with RAZORBACK's Dave Aguirre, would undertake instrumental club gigs under the billing of SPECTRUM. WOLFGANG and RAZORBACK personnel also collude in the covers band FLAMING HEMORRHOIDS.
