Following the death of WINDIR frontman Valfar (a.k.a. Terje Bakken) in January 2004 former band personnel vocalist / guitarist Sture Dingsøyr, bassist Hváll (a.k.a. Jarle Kvåle) and drummer Steingrim (Jørn Holen) forged a new, Sogndal based venture entitled VREID. Once having undertaken a tribute gig to Valfar, dubbed 'Heidra Valfar' for September 3rd, on what would have been the singer's 26th birthday, at the Rockefeller Arena in Oslo, this new project signed a three album deal with Tabu Recordings. VREID debuted with the album 'Kraft', recorded during the summer at Hváll's Studio 1184 and mixed at Subsonic Society Studio in Oslo that October.

VREID would be announced as support act to ENSLAVED's 2005 European tour dates. In early 2005 the band contributed to the Townsend Avalanche Music IMMORTAL tribute album entitled 'Epimythion - Tribute to Immortal' with their rendition of 'As The Eternity Opens'.

Tabu Recordings issued the 'Pitch Black Brigade' album, recorded at Studio 1184 in September through November 2005, in Scandinavia in March 2006 whilst Candlelight picked the record up for USA release.

Steingrim also united with WINDIR keyboard player Gaute Refsnes to initiate the COR SCORPII project, working alongside ULCUS and WINDIR guitarist Stian Bakketeig, Rune Sjøthun on rhythm guitar, Inge Jonny Lomheim on bass and lead vocalist Thomas S. Øvstedal for their opening demo entitled 'Attergangar'.

VREID, BATTERED and IN VAIN teamed up for the "Northern Brigade" tour beginning in Belgium during late March 2007. The album 'I Krig' emerged that May. A vinyl edition was restricted to 500 copies.

VREID issued the 'Milorg' album in January 2009.
