Biography

A union of Norwegian elite Metal created during 1998. Oslo's LUNARIS cited members from acts such as SATYRICON, 1349, SPIRAL ARCHITECT and BORKNAGAR. The initial formation was assembled by 1349 and ALVHEIM vocalist Balfori (a.k.a. (Lars Larsen) and guitarist M (Mikael Omlid). The following year they would be joined by SPIRAL ARCHITECT and SATYRICON guitarist Azarek (Steinar Gundersen), bassist Erik Aadland, keyboard player T-Roy (Raymond Njerve) and drummer Asgeir Mickelson of SPIRAL ARCHITECT and BORKNAGAR repute. ENTHRAL's Martin Rafoss took over on bass in 2000 and his brief tenure would see a succession by Andrè Werdenskrieg before Maztema (Øyvind Hægeland) from ARCTURUS, MAYHEM, MANITOU and SPIRAL ARCHITECT assumed the position.

The debut album, 2002's 'The Infinite', was recorded with a line-up of vocalist Balfori, handling the harsher vocal tones alongside SPIRAL ARCHITECT's Øyvind Hægeland in command of clean vocals. The band would also comprise guitarist Azarek, bass player Maztema, keyboard player T-Roy and drummer Asgeir Mickelson. Following completion of the album Mickelson was replaced on the drums by Janos Di Croce of the Italian act VEGA. Guitarist Azarak exited in mid 2003.

Asgeir Mickelson teamed up with San Francisco Bay Area Thrash veterans TESTAMENT as a temporary stand in for regular sticksman Jon Allen. Mickelson took the opportunity to lay down sessions with BORKNAGAR, VINTERSORG and TOR HØILAND.

LUNARIS debuted their revised line-up and material from new album 'Cyclic' in December at a gig in Hønefoss. Replacing Maztema would be bassist Dr. Dream, co-founder of Black Metal act TRELLDOM, with Azarak's position being taken by the FANTASMA credited HP. The album witnessed a guest contribution by the TESTAMENT, DEATH and SADUS veteran bassist Steve DiGiorgio on the track 'I.A.D.'.

Asgeir Mickelson was announced as having temporarily joined the ranks of DIMMU BORGIR as stand in live session drummer during March of 2004. However, upon issue of this statement the drummer's manager refuted the assertion.

In 2005 ex-LUNARIS bassist Erik Aadland founded TWISTED INTO FORM alongside SPIRAL ARCHITECT guitarist Kaj Gornitzka, EXTOL drummer David Husvik and vocalist Leif J. Knashaug. It was learned that in August of 2005 Balfori of LUNARIS, alongside musicians from SATYRICON, SPIRAL ARCHITECT and the DIMMU BORGIR, NILE, ANGEL CORPSE credited drummer Tony Laureano had recorded tracks for a new "savagely innovative" Black Metal project SYSTEM:OBSCURE.
