Biography
Premier Oslo Punk Garage Rock act. The self styled "fiveheaded rockmonster" GLUECIFER injected a good degree of old fashioned Boogie into the mix and would, shoulder to shoulder with TURBONEGRO, THE HIVES and THE HELLACOPTERS, soon be spearheading the latest Scandinavian wave with initial 7" outings 'God's Chosen Dealer' in 1995 and the follow up EP 'Dick Disguised As Pussy'. With success burgeoning Tiger Records compiled these early tracks as the 'Nineteen Inches Of Rock' album, subsequently re-issued with additional songs as 'Head To Head Boredom' by Devil Doll. An early, if brief, band member would be the erstwhile BEYOND DAWN and PILEDRIVER guitarist Sindre Goksøyr.
Their reputation would be solidified with a work ethic that not only produced a further crop of 7" singles, eagerly snapped up on the collectors market. Amongst these 1997's 'Dambuster' single on the Bad Afro label betrayed the band's quirky sense of humour with its B side rendition of TED NUGENT's seminal 'Cat Scratch Fever' whilst 'Shitty City' brandished a take on WAYNE COUNTY & THE ELECTRIC CHAIRS 'Max's Kansas City'. The 'Respect The Rock' releases, confusingly two separate releases bearing the same title, were in collaboration with their contemporaries THE HELLACOPTERS. The White Jazz 10" vinyl version held three tracks, including a version of BORED's 'No Way' with the US Man's Ruin variant boasting four totally different songs. The entire first pressing of the Man's Ruin record was duly recalled due to a manufacturing glitch causing all copies to be pressed in mono.
GLUECIFER signed to White Jazz for the albums 'Ridin' The Tiger' released in 1997 and 'Soaring Eagles At Night To Rise With The Pigs In The Morning' the following year. In keeping with tradition the 1998 7" 'Mano-A-Mano' was bolstered by a B side run through of ROSE TATTOO's 'Remedy' whilst the 'Lard Ass Hagen' single was backed by 'Son Of A Good Family' originally by THE LEATHER NUN and September 1998's 'Get The Horn' by a boistrous blast through THIN LIZZY's 'Thunder & Lightning'. The band also shared a split single, 'Boiler Trip', with ELECTRIC FRANKENSTEIN.
1999 found GLUECIFER breaking out of Europe and onto the international touring arena. Singles that year included 'The Year Of Manly Living', with the THE SMALL FACES 'Wham Bam, Thank You Mam' as obligitary B side cover, on White Jazz and 'Get That Psycho Out of My Face' issued on the Spanish Munster label, the latter sporting a B side cover version of STATUS QUO's 'Driftin' Away'. GLUECIFER once again paid homage to TED NUGENT by including 'Just What The Doctor Ordered' on their split Sub Pop single with THE MURDER CITY DEVILS.
GLUECIFER donated their tribute to RADIO BIRDMAN with the inclusion of 'Monday Morning Gunk' on the 'Flattery' tribute album released by Nomango Records in 2000. GLUCIFER's long running campaign paid dividends with 2002's 'Basement Apes' album. The band's first record for Epic Records in Scandinavia and SPV in Germany, it outsold all antecedent efforts, cruising past gold sales status in Norway.
GLUECIFER forwent the touring circuit for much of 2003 and would be spent putting together the 'Automatic Thrill' album. A preceding single, 'A Call From The Other Side', entered the Norwegian charts at no. 15, paving the way for 'Automatic Thrill' to crash into their homeland charts at no.2. The band united with Sweden's THE QUILL and headliners MONSTER MAGNET for European touring in April of 2004. A coinciding single 'Here Come The Pigs' included a B side rendition of 'Next To You' originally by THE POLICE.
GLUCIFER would promote the three hour DVD release 'Royally Stuffed' with European tour dates supported by Stockholm's CAPTAIN MURPHY and Norwegians BONK. In October the band recorded a new track entitled 'You Keep Me Up All Night' to be donated to the compilation album 'No Music Requests', a collection of songs celebrating the 20th anniversary of Oslo's Last Train bar. The band traversed Europe once again November but shows in Bochum, Germany, and Hasselt, Belgium were pulled when Biff Malibu was taken ill with an infection. GLUECIFER closed the year by supporting German punk legends DIE TOTEN HOSEN on some shows in December.
GLUECIFER intended to take a year out in 2005 before regrouping for a new album but with word that both Biff Malibu and Raldo Useless had exited, the band announced it was to fold in July. The group schuled "farewell" shows for the Autumn. Stu Manx would be active with new act THE 3856. GLUECIFER's farewell tour saw the combo bowing out in fine style, the swansong gig being held at the Hard Rock Cafe Times Square in New York City on 28th October.
That same year GLUECIFER drummer Danny Young joined up with all-star trio TODD YOUTH'S HEARTACHES, fronted by Todd Youth of MURPHY'S LAW, D-GENERATION, DANZIG, WARZONE, AGNOSTIC FRONT, SAMHAIN, CHROME LOCUST and THE CHELSEA SMILES repute on vocals and guitar with Sami Yaffa from HANOI ROCKS, JETBOY, DEMOLITION 23 and NEW YORK DOLLS on bass.
