Biography
An eccentric and challenging post-Metal band, BEYOND DAWN surfaced from the Oslo suburb of Kolbotn, manifested by the erstwhile EXCREMIST pairing of guitar player Petter Haavik and bassist / vocalist Tore Gjedrem, joined soon after formation by second guitarist Thor Arne Bergset and drummer Einar Sjursø. Prior to cutting their first recordings Sindre Goksøyr took over from Bergset. The demo tapes 'Tales From An Extinguished World' in December 1990, described by the band as "generic doom/death metal" and recorded in a kindergarten, and the May 1991 follow up 'Heaven's Dark Reflection' set BEYOND DAWN on their career path. In early 1991, the group made their live debut at Oslo's Elm Street club supporting VALHALL. Next in line would be the issue of the 7" single EP 'Up Through The Linear Shades', recorded at Waterfall Studios with the song 'Bygone' featuring guest soprano vocals by Ane Hvesser. These sessions marked the introduction of new axeman Espen Ingierd. Prior to recording Goksøyr had been go, subsequently joining Industrial Pop combo PILEDRIVER and also enjoying a short term with GLUECIFER.
Hailed as somewhat close to a masterpiece by much of the underground Metal press, the EP was promoted by gigs in their homeland supporting the likes of THE 3RD & THE MORTAL, ULVER and CADAVER. BEYOND DAWN's next move was to issue a four track record 'Longing For Scarlet Days' on Adipocere Records, recorded at Creative Studios and seeing the light of day in April 1994. On two of the songs Ingierd debuted as lead vocalist, his baritone contrasting Tore's shrieks and growls. It also introduced the trombone, played by Dag Midbrød. Simultaneous to this release the demo cassette ''Thorns In The Eye Of The Chosen' was distributed to various labels.
Changing labels to Candlelight Records BEYOND DAWN released 'Pity Love' in November 1996. Both albums display a very original, depressive and bizarre mixture between Doom, Psychedelic, Gothic and Avant Garde Rock. During the Spring and summer of 1996 BEYOND DAWN set to work on a new project, six songs performed almost entirely on acoustic instruments forming the basis of what would be the 'In Reverie' release. However, with Candlelight showing a marked reluctance to release the finished sessions the band themselves in search of a new label home. They were finally picked up by Misanthropy Records, another UK label. The 'In Reverie' sessions were shelved, recordings of a new album commenced and finally, in March 1998, almost two and a half years after its predecessor, 'Revelry' was released, the first to feature co-vocalist Kate Havnevik and also the first to see BEYOND DAWN's music completely devoid of all Metal elements.
In April of 1999 the 'In Reverie' sessions were released on the Italian label Eibon Records, this release also including two electronic reworkings of 'Revelry' tracks. With Misanthropy's demise BEYOND DAWN were fostered over to the Peaceville label where, in August of 1999 their most diverse work, 'Electric Skulking Machine' recorded in Liverpool, emerged to ecstatic reviews. Dag Midbrød would be absent from these recordings, which featured guest vocalists Kate Havnevik and Lisa Ericsson of the band SCHULTE / ERICSSON.
Drummer Einar Sjursø, also an active participant of VIRUS, INFERNÖ and Doom act LAMENTED SOULS, guested on FLEURETY's 2000 album 'Department Of Apocalyptic Affairs'. He would also join Pagan Folk act HAGALAZ' RUNEDANCE for their October 2000 tour of Germany. In early 2001 BEYOND DAWN's 'Atmosphere' was donated to the Nocturnal Art Productions soundtrack album 'Nemi'. In March BEYOND DAWN made their live debut outside of Norway on the 'Peacefest' tour, performing gigs alongside label mates MY DYING BRIDE, KATATONIA, THINE and SOUNDISCIPLES across the UK, Holland and Belgium.
BEYOND DAWN's July 2003 'Frysh' album, issued through Peaceville Records, included a cover version of AUTOPSY's 'Severed Survival'. In early 2005 the band contributed to the Townsend Avalanche Music IMMORTAL tribute album entitled 'Epimythion - Tribute to Immortal' with their rendition of 'Storming Through Red Clouds And Holocaust Winds'. That same year Duplicate Records issued an album comprising entirely Electro remixes dubbed 'We're Down With Species Of Any Kind'.
