Biography

Oslo's BACKSTREET GIRLS was founded during December of 1984, the insugural formation comprising vocalist / guitarist Tom Kristensen, guitarists Hans Petter Baarli, of RIFF RAFF, and Stein Ramberg, bassist Pål Kristensen of A TECHNICOLOUR DREAM and Bjørn Terje Baarli, another RIFF RAFF man, on drums. Ramberg's prior career had seen the guitarist journey through acts such as CIRCUS SIDESHOW, DIVIN' DUCKS, CASINO & CLAUDIA, GHOSTRIDERS FRONTPAGE, SATURDAY COWBOYS, THE ACT and KOLLAPS. The group's debut gig came at The Wall venue in Oslo on 17th November 1984.

The first line-up change ocurred in January 1985 when Jon Berg took over the guitar spot from Ramberg. This version of the band appeared in the movie 'X', where they portrayed the fictional band "GYPO". However, in August both Berg and Kristensen opted out, the former joining ROAD and subsequently GUMMGAKK whilst Kristensen travelled through the ranks of T.K.A.O.L., SUICIDE PILOTS and COSMIC MESSIAH. As replacement singer, BACKSTREET GIRLS drafted new singer Anders Kronberg, although this latest candidate's tenure lasted a matter of weeks until Arne Årnes, of the EASTERBUNNIES, took the vocal position in September. In 1986 BACKSTREET GIRLS put out their first album, 'Mental Shakedown', on the independent Medicine label. A year later the group installed another new frontman, again pulled from the EASTERBUNNIES and Z-OFF, Bjørn Müller. This band structure proved to be the most productive, releasing the albums 'Boogie Till' You Puke', 'Party On Elmstreet' and 'Coming Down Hard'.

In May 1991 the line-up fractured again as Müller left in order to form SPEED OF SOUND. Olle Hillborg, from the GLORIOUS BANKROBBERS, stepped in as substitute and the album 'Let's Have It' was released October 1992 on Warner Music. A live record, 'Live - Get Yer Yo-Yo's Out', followed but this sixth version of BACKSTREET GIRLS would last two years. After having held auditions in England, in January 1994 Irishman Pat Diamond was inducted as singer as the band crafted the album 'Don't Fake It To Long'. Unfortunately Diamond was ejected from Norway in November of 1995 due to visa issues and the album was never released. Regrouping, the band re-drafted Bjørn Müller. First product of the reunion would be a 7" single, 'Monster In My Cadillac' on Hit!Me Records.

A change in the bass role came when longstanding four-stringer Pål Kristensen made way for Tommy Lug, of LOST LUGGAGE and DISKOFNASK, in November 1998. Kristensen would return to the ranks the following and a six year album break would be broken in 1999 as FaceFront issued 'Hellway To High', this album notably including cover versions of BUDGIE's 'In For The Kill' and THE ANGELS 'Take A Long Line' and 'I Ain't The One'. Kristensen was out again shortly after, replaced by Morten Lunde of THE MORMONES. Universal delivered the compilation collection 'Boogie Till' You Bleed' in November 2000 and FaceFront issued new studio product in 'Tuff Tuff Tuff' in March 2001. This outing would be promoted in Europe with support dates to ROSE TATTOO, these dates recorded for the September 2002 album 'Black Boogie Death Rock N' Roll', made up of six new studio tracks and six live recordings.

In December of 2002 bass would be delegated to Dan Thunderbird. BACKSTREET GIRLS next opus, 'Sick My Duck' again through FaceFront, would be pushed by a 20 concert "Boogie My Life Away" tour of Norway throughout 2003.
