MYSTICUM began life as the Industrial Black Metal trio SABAZIOS releasing two demos, 'Wintermass' and 'Medusa's Tears', during 1992, both involving the use of brutal drum computers. The SABAZIOS tapes led to an agreement with then MAYHEM member Euronymous and his record label DSP. Just prior to recording of the scheduled album the name change to MYSTICUM ensued.

The band's plans were thrown into disarray with the murder of Euronymous by BURZUM leader Count Grisnackh. However, former MAYHEM drummer Hellhammer was later to put in a stint with MYSTICUM. This liaison was brief though and MYSTICUM reverted back to a drum computer.

MYSTICUM issued a 1994 shared 7" single with ULVER.

The album was released by Fullmoon Records in 1995. Bassist Einar Fredriksen would later come to the fore with Doom Metal band FUNERAL and Death Metal combo THE FLESH. He would also add to his duties by joining PARADIGMA in 1997. MYSTICUM contributed the track 'Eriaminell' to the 1998 Full Moon Productions compilation album 'A Tribute To Hell'.

Fredriksen committed suicide on 10th January 2003. In 2004 the Planet Satan Revolution label released the MYSTICUM album 'Lost Masters Of The Universe'.
