Wellington Black Metal band DEMONIAC, established in May 1993, issued the April 1994 demo 'The Birth Of Diabolical Blood'. A 7" single, 'Moonblood', followed on United Blasphemy Records. They would sign to the French Evil Omen label to record their November 1994 debut album 'Prepare For War'. This set included a cover version of BATHORY's 'The Return Of The Darkness And Evil'. The 1994 version of the band comprised the vocalist / bass player Behemoth (real name Lindsey Duncan), guitarist Heimdall (Sam Totman), keyboard player The Magnus, HEAD LIKE A HOLE credited 'Adramolech' (Mark Hamill) on drums. The latter had originally occupied the lead vocal role.

DEMONIAC's second album, 'Stormblade' recorded at Marmalade Studio in Wellington, was released in September 1996 and featured a hidden closing track, a re-recorded version of 'The Birth Of Diabloic Blood'. The band shifted away from the raw Black Metal sound and took on a near Power Metal stance whilst retaining the underground vocals. The band relocated to England during 1997 to take part in the 'World Domination' tour of Europe headlined by DARK TRANQUILITY and ENSLAVED. 'Stormblade's inclusion of the song 'Nigger Slut' prompted dismay and second pressings showed the title revised as 'N. Slut'. Strangely, the song 'Hatred Is Purity' escaped the censors, despite its questionable lyrics extolling "white man stand up for your race."

Frontman Behemoth would relinquish the bass role in 1998 to RAZOR OF OCCAM, BETRAYER, BESTIAL WARLUST, CORPSE MOLESTATION and ADORIOR man Chris Hastings (a.k.a. 'Corpsemolestor') as Adromelech also exited.

DEMONIAC's third outing, 'The Fire And The Wind' recorded at Academy Music Studio in the UK with producer Mags, arrived in 1999. Osmose Productions rejected the original cover art the band had submitted, a pornographic photograph. The finished product featured a heavily distorted version. Unfortunately the group landed themselves in further controversy when it was learned the track 'Myths Of Metal' included the lyric “Hitler metal, Sieg Heil”. Facing a ban on the album from the German authorities the band issued a swift apology. Denying any racist slur the group pointed out that Sam Totman claimed Maori descent whilt the band's other six-stringer Shred (real name Herman Li) was from Hong Kong.

By 2000 the position was in the hands of erstwhile VOICE OF DESTRUCTION bassist Diccon Harper. Drums were handed over to new Slovenian recruit Matej Setinc. The band has strong connections with Power Metal band DRAGONFORCE with Totman, Li and Setinc all involved in the initial formation. A later DEMONIAC recruit into the DRAGONFORCE ranks would be Diccon Harper.
