Biography
A West Auckland Nu-Metal Rap styled act with diverse influences and plenty of melody. BLINDSPOTT, established in 1997, comprised singer Damien Alexander, guitarist Marcus Powell, bass player Gareth Fleming, sampler Karl Vilisini with Shelton Weelright on drums. The band first came to attention by winning the Auckland Central heat of the 'Battle of the Bands' 2000 competition. This exposure scored a recording contract with major label Capitol Records.
During 2001 the band reaped major support slots to such visiting artists as LINKIN PARK and P.O.D. Quite spectacularly BLINDSPOTT crashed straight into the number 1 position in the New Zealand national album charts with their Paul Matthews produced debut, issued that October, beating out both NIRVANA and FOO FIGHTERS. The album was highly successful in Indonesia and across Asia as well, with many hundreds of thousands of illegal copies being sold on the black market on top of the official release. Back in New Zealand the band's debut single 'Nil By Mouth' sold out on its first day of release. A succession of New Zealand hit singles followed with 'Room To Breathe', 'Phlex', 'Blank', 'S.U.I.T' and 'Lit Up'.
Gareth Flemming and Karl Vilising exited the band and were replaced by new members guitarist Brandon and bassist Dave. Flemming went on to form a new Rock band called FOREVER NOW. With the new line-up BLINDSPOTT, made a comeback in 2005 with the 'Yours Truly' single reaching the Top 10 in New Zealand. A new album, End The Silence', recorded by with Swedish producers Pelle Henrickson and Eskil Loveström was released in May 2006 hitting the top spot on the charts, preceded by the 'Drown' single, which charted at number 4. That same month BLINDSPOTT opened for KORN in Auckland. Notably 'End The Silence', hosting an unlisted "hidden" track 'Deadset', considerably moved away from the more commercial leanings of its predecessor, eschewing samples and rapping to offer a cleaner, purist Metal sound.
In late 2007 BLINDSPOTT announced that the band would be going on hiatus. Shelton Weelright and Marcus Powell relocated to the UK shortly after for a new Rock project called DEMPSY.
