Biography
HIGHWAY CHILE is a traditional Metal band formed in Rotterdam during 1981 with a line-up comprising of vocalist Armand Van Der Stigchel, guitarists Ben Blaauw and Martin Mens, bass player Ernest Thimister and drummer Ernst Van Ee. A self-titled demo cassette was recorded in August that year. From their inception the band toured on a regular basis, which soon told on Thimister and Mens who were to quit. Their replacements were bassist Eric Finck and guitarist Peter Barnouw. This line-up recorded the well received 1983 debut album 'Storybook Heroes' for 21 Records. With product on the shelves the record now enabled the band to step up a rung and support visiting international acts such as WHITESNAKE, MOTÖRHEAD and DEF LEPPARD.
1983's 'Fever' EP Barnouw was ousted in favour of Ronald Bakker, although due to the bankruptcy of their former record company Inelco. HIGHWAY CHILE signed to Lark who re-released the debut album in a remixed form, adding the title track from the EP. Unfortunately, problems ensued during the recording of the second album resulting in Van Ee and Blaauw quitting to form HELLOISE. Replacements were quickly found in ex-SEDUCER drummer Jan Koster and guitarist Erik Karreman and the Shell Schellekens produced 'For The Wild And Lonely' mini-album proved a much more commercial effort than previous works.
The quality of the record failed to prevent Van der Stigchel from leaving the group though, the singer leaving for America to form MOHAWK, so the band's second, full-length album,'Rockerama', was recorded with British vocalist Sav Pearce, ex-MARSEILLE and SAVAGE LUCY, and guitarist Eric John.
HIGHWAY CHILE persevered for the 1990 'High Noon' album enrolling Asmerican guitarist GREG REITER, a veteran of British Thrash merchants AVENGER as well as US based bands METALWOLF and PSYCHOPATH. With Reiter HIGHWAY CHILE put in one solitary gig before calling it a day.
Upon HIGHWAY CHILE's demise Koster joined STRANGERS AT A WEDDING and then SLEEZE BEEZ. Post HELLOISE Van Ee would release a solo album in 2000 'Powerplay' credited to simply VAN EE. By 2001 he had re-emerged with a fresh incarnation of HELLOISE.
HIGHWAY CHILE, now fronted by singer Robert Soeterboek of VAN EE, AYREON and WICKED SENSATION repute, re-emerged in 2002 touting the album 'On The Road Again Live!' The line-up also featured Ernest van Ee, guitarists Martin Mens and Attila Szabo with Edwin den Haag on bass. However, both Soeterboek and Szabo exited in 2003. The following year HIGHWAY CHILE, now with Gert Nijboer on guitar and VAN EE and HELLOISE man Stan Verbraak on lead vocals, recorded a four track demo.
Belgian label Mausoleum Records released the new studio set 'Keeper Of The Flame' in 2007. Edwin den Haag took his leave in 2008, being replaced by another HELLOISE veteran, Marshell Remeeus.
