Biography

Although now recognised as one of the Netherlands leading blasphemic Death Metal acts, GOD DETHRONED had a far from easy road to success. Having been sensationally snapped up by American label Metal Blade Dutch outfit GOD DETHRONED then had to stand back in amazement when, quite surreally, Metal Blade announced that GOD DETHRONED's debut album, 'The Christhunt', was "boring"! At this juncture GOD DETHRONED comprised vocalist / guitarist Henri Sattler, former ADETAR guitarist Oscar Carre, bassist Marco Arends and drummer Ard De Weerd.

The debut album of 1992, produced by Berthus Westerhuys at Franky's Recording Kitchen, was in fact such a hurdle for the band to overcome that GOD DETHRONED actually split up after its release. Sales were not exactly startling as the record company neglected to include the band's name on the cover artwork! During the interim front man Henrik Sattler joined Thrash act MINISTRY OF TERROR and following a European support tour to IMPALED NAZARENE, re-founded GOD DETHRONED.

It wasn't until 1997 that the group were able to follow the debut record up with 'The Grand Grimoire' album, produced once again by Berthus Westerhuys, the musicians were novelly portrayed as dark age heroes, their faces juxtaposed onto medieval paintings of knights with accompanying legends testifying as to the manner of their death.

In support of the new record GOD DETHRONED opened for label mates SIX FEET UNDER on their lengthy 1997 European tour. 'The Christhunt' saw a re-issue in 1998, being re-mastered and clad in new photographic artwork depicting 'No#1 Ratbutcher'. A fresh album, 'Bloody Blasphemy', arrived in 1999, maintaining Berthus Westerhuys as producer and notably including guest session vocals from Nienke de Jong.

Hammerheart Records released GOD DETHRONED's original demo 'The Ancient Ones' on CD in 2000. This compilation also included the previously unreleased, 8 minute track 'Infernal Sights Of A Bloody Dawn', 'Morbid Rites' taken from the 'DSFA 4' compilation plus live tracks and a banned video for 'Necromagnon'. The band geared up for fresh product by supplanting drummer Roel Sander with American Tony Laureano, a veteran of ACHERON, ANGEL CORPSE and MALEVOLENT CREATION. Sander created INHUME.

THE CROWN drummer Janne Saarenpää would deputise for GOD DETHRONED for their 2001 'No Mercy' festival appearances. The band then enrolled Ariën Van Weesenbeek on drums, the new man making his mark as a sessioneer on EDGECRUSHER's 2002 demo 'Impressions Of Mankind'. A 2003 album, originally heralded as 'The Universal Slavedriver', would change titled to 'Into The Lungs Of Hell'. This album marked a change in both recording venue and producer for GOD DETHRONED, the band cutting 'Into The Lungs Of Hell' at Berno Studios in Malmö, Sweden with Henrik Larsson behind the desk. Initial copies would come with a free bonus disc which included live recordings from a Los Angeles gig, video clips for 'Villa Vampiria' and 'Under The Golden Wings Of Death', several previously unissued tracks, a re-recorded version of the song 'God Dethroned' as well as a cover version of POSSESSED's 'Satan's Curse'.

During 2003 drummer Ariën van Weesenbeek united with former TRAIL OF TEARS and SAHARA DUST singer Helena Iren Michaelsen to found a new act billed as IMPERIA. Meantime UK and European dates projected into October, dubbed the 'Bonded By Metal' trek, found GOD DETHRONED participating in a heavyweight billing comprising NUCLEAR ASSAULT, AGENT STEEL, MORTICIAN, EXODUS, OCCULT and CALLENISH CIRCLE.

In 2004 GOD DETHRONED would donate their rendition of 'Satan's Curse' to the 'Seven Gates Of Horror' tribute album assembled by the Dutch Karmaggedon Media label in homage to pioneering Bay Area Thrash act POSSESSED. Working with producer Henrik Larsson once again, GOD DETHRONED entered Berno Studios in Malmö, once again in July to record a new album 'The Lair Of The White Worm', their first with new members, EDGECRUSHER guitarist Isaac De La Haye, replacing Jens van der Valk, and bassist Henk "Henke" Zinger of GRIND MINDED.

Low Countries gigs in early 2005 witnessed a union with Swedish veterans GRAVE. In May Arian van Weesenbeek put down session drums for the debut DELAIN album.

GOD DETHRONED announced a September 2005, five week US road partnership dubbed the 'International Extreme Music Festival' in collaboration with BYZANTINE, NIGHTRAGE, EPOCH OF UNLIGHT, HELL WITHIN and LILITU. This tour added German acts LEAVES' EYES and ATROCITY in October.

Henk Zinger dropped out of GRIND MINDED in January 2006 in order to prioritise GOD DETHRONED. In April it was learned Henri Sattler was set to feature as guest singer on the track 'Queen Of The Damned' featured on all female Greek Black Metal band ASTARTE's 'Demonized' album. Drummer Arian van Weesenbeek sessioned on EPICA album recordings in December 2006.
