Biography
The fiery Fusion acoustic duo RODRIGO Y GABRIELA, Rodrigo Sanchez and Gabriela Quintero, blazed a trail across Europe during 2005. Quite uniquelly, the pair held a tradition with the Metal genre, transferring this intensity of playing into the mainstream arena with some truly breathtaking live performances. Sanchez specialises in fluid finger picking whilst Quintero's frightening furious combination of Hispanic rhythms and guitar body percussion lends near hysteria to their live shows.
They had met as teens in the Thrash Metal band TERRA ACIDA. Previous to this band, Sanchez had drummed for CASTLOW whilst Quintero had featured as a member of Metal bands LAS BRUJAS ("The Witches"), LAS FORMIGAS ("The Ants") and SUBTERRANEO. With TERRA ACIDA an album was recorded but never released due to the band's dissatisfaction with the record company. They had first travelled to Dublin, Ireland from their home city of Mexico City in an attempt to free themselves from the restrictive music culture of their homeland. However, upon arrival in the Irish capital during 1999 they discovered that promised accomodation was not available and, with only $1,000 between them, they were forced to earn a living in the Folk Rock pubs of Temple Bar and Grafton Street. Here, word of their extreme talents soon spread. They busked their way around Denmark and Barcelona in Spain before returning to Dublin.
RODRIGO Y GABRIELA, signing to Irish label Rubyworks, issued the albums 'Foc' and 'Live Manchester & Dublin'. Their studio debut was re-recorded, as 'Re-Foc', in 2002. European touring as guests to BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB, COURTNEY PINE, DAMIEN RICE and MURRAY LACHAN YOUNG followed. 'Live Manchester & Dublin', recorded at the Academy 2 and Christ Church Cathedral, complete with cover of METALLICA's 'One', was the very first purely instrumental album to crack the Irish top ten.
The June 2006 album 'Rodrigo Y Gabriela' was produced by John Leckie and recorded in Bath, England. Notably featured would be covers of METALLICA's 'Orion' and a souped up Jazz rendition of LED ZEPPELIN's 'Stairway To Heaven'. Hungarian gypsy violinist Roby Lakotos also guested on the track 'Ixtapa'. The record debuted at number 1 on the national Irish charts. Ato Records released the album in the USA during October. With live dates spanning well into 2007, before the end of the year the record has sold over half a million copies.
RODRIGO Y GABRIELA released a live album, 'Live In Japan', complete with a bonus live DVD on 28th October 2008. The set was recorded at their live sold out Japanese debut at Tokyo's Duo club on 30th March.
In 2008 the duo contributed a version of 'Oogie Boogie's Song' to the 'Nightmare Revisited' album, a collection of reworked songs from the soundtrack to Tim Burton's 1993 movie 'The Nightmare Before Christmas'.
