Biography
Extremely Primitive and raw Black Metal band. In keeping with Japanese stereotypes, Kuwana's SABBAT are seemingly armed with an inexhaustible work ethic that has spawned a vast catalogue of works. However, their prodigious industry is tempered by the fact that most of their releases are issued in strictly limited amounts as low as 100. Indeed, SABBAT's first four albums were restricted to a mere 500 copies.
SABBAT formed in 1983 with a line up of frontman Gezol, guitarists Elizaveat and Ozny with drummer Valvin. The band had previously been titled EVIL with singer Toshiya but upon his departure the title SABBAT was adopted. In 1985 Valvin departed to be superseded by Samm (sometimes known as 'Gero'). Ozny left the following year trimming SABBAT down to a trio.
In 1989 SABBAT united for a one off gig and tried out the services of vocalist Possessed Hammer and guitarist Barraveat. Further ructions witnessed the departure of Samm in 1990 being replaced by Zorugelion. Temis Osmond took the guitarists position in 1991 in time for the 'Bloody Countess' demo sessions.
The 1994 compilation of re-recorded early material 'Black Up Your Soul' included a version of 'Satan's Serenade' by English NWoBHM band QUARTZ. The same year SABBAT contributed a bilingual version of 'Black Fire' and a remix of 'Satanic Rites' to the compilation 'Far East Gate In Inferno'.
1995 saw SABBAT revisiting more old songs for the album 'For Satan And Sacrifice'. They also chose another NWoBHM cover version, this time 'Kiss Of Death' by SATAN. The band proved that they had a sense of humour by re-recording their earlier 'Panic In The Head' retitled and with new lyrics as 'Baby Disco Is Fuck' as part of their contribution to the infamous 'Headbangers Against Disco' EP alongside GEHENNAH, BESTIAL WARLUST and INFERNO.
SABBAT are noted for their run of international flavoured 'Harmageddon' series of singles which comprise songs in different languages including rather novelly a Swahili version of 'Black Fire'! The 'South American Harmageddon' outing was made up exclusively of cover versions of fellow Japanese artists JURASSIC JADE and SACRIFICE.
The 1999 'Live Panica' and 2000's 'Live Revenge' albums were both limited to 100 copies. 2000 also saw SABBAT cutting their take of Italian 80's Thrash act BULLDOZER's 'Whisky Time' on a split tribute single shared with IMPERIAL. The Iron Pegasus 2003 double album 'Fetishism', limited to 666 copies, combined the 1994 EP ''Sabbatical Devilucifer' with the ''Sabbatical Demon' demos along with exclusive tracks. The first 222 pressings would be made available in a mixture of red and gold vinyl. Also surfacing that year would be the studio album 'Karmagmassacre', also on Iron Pegasus, and the archive live album 'Live Hamagurism', recorded in October of 1999 through HMSS Records. Naturally a limited edition, only 100 green vinyl copies of 'Live Hamagurism' were released.
Somewhat of an ultimate collectors piece came with the 'Live Wacko' box set. Comprising the CD singles 'Gezonslaught', 'Valvinosnlaught', 'Elizaveatosnlaught', 'Perfect Wacko', 'Perfect Kindergarden' and 'Perfect Revenge' also featured would be T-shirt, Booklet, Badge and even a Sabbat Doll. Only 25 were manufactured. That same year the split cassette 'Kamikaze Splitting Roar' would be issued in union with ABIGAIL.
SABBAT's collectability would be heightened by the January 2004 release of 'Sabbatical Satanichrist Slaughter' by Nuclear War Now! Productions. Only 1000 of this 6" vinyl box set would be manufactured, with 200 of these being the 'die hard' version. The elaborate sleeve packaging folded out into a 28" inverted crucifix. Although all variants came with poster and inserts the 'die hard' version added colored vinyl, poster, extra insert, a 4" embroidered patch, sticker, textured sleeve, obi strip, and a differently colored foil stamp on the cover. Another rarity would be the Assaulter Productions 'Hamaguri Resurrection' single. Of the 1000 pressed a special 100 would be honoured with coloured vinyl Sabbatical Otaku status in a custom Screen printed felt sleeve with poster, sticker and a bonus CD-R 'Live Grilling'.
SABBAT arranged a debut North American tour for September 2005. Novelly, SABBAT funded this enterprise directly from proceeds generated by sales of the 'Live Sabbatical Hamaguri Queen' album. A show recorded in New York was subsequently issued, albeit as a restricted run of just 150 copies in clear vinyl, as the 'Brooklyn Blackfire' album. Closing a 14 year tenure, guitarist Temis Osmond bowed out in November. Time Before Time records put out the 'Geionslaught 1986' album in 2005, a recording of a June 8th, 1986 concert.
