Biography
Celebrated exponents of J-Rock, the B'Z have sold over 100 million units in Japan alone, making them Japan's biggest selling band in history. The duo of singer Kohshi Inaba and guitarist Tak Matsumoto debuted in September 1988 with the single 'Dakara Sono Te Wo Hanashite' and accompanying self-titled album, attaining a number 47 position on the national Japanese charts. 'Off The Lock' followed in May 1989, reaching number 33 on the charts. Although this was a moderate success, it was October 1989's mini-album 'Bad Communication' which pushed the band into superstardom. Third album 'Break Through' was delivered in February 1990 and hit number 3. November 1990's 'Risky' gave the band its first number one. November 1991's 'In The Life' followed suit.
The B'Z had entered into an unprecedented run of success at this point as every album release hit the top position on the Japanese charts. In succession these included October 1992's 'Run', March 1994's 'The 7th Blues', November 1995's 'Loose', November 1997's 'Survive', July 1999's 'Brotherhood', December 2000's 'Eleven' and July 2002's 'Green'.
On September 22nd 2002, B'Z performed their first live show in the United States, an event dubbed 'B'z LIVE-GYM 2002 - Rock n' California Roll". Naturally the 2003 album, 'Big Machine' released in September, was another chart topper. Japanese touring in 2003, captured on the 'Typhoon' DVD, would see the installation of the COSMOSQUAD rhythm section of bassist Barry Sparks and drummer Shane Gaalaas. In late 2003 guitarist and chief songwriter TAK MATSUMOTO formulated a new band venture billed as TMG, the Tak Matsumoto Group, a collaboration featuring the NIGHT RANGER and DAMN YANKEES credited bassist JACK BLADES and ex-MR. BIG vocalist ERIC MARTIN.
In 2004 the songs 'Banzai' and 'Arigato', featuring DIESEL MACHINE and COSMOSQUAD drummer Shane Gaalaas became the band's 27th and 28th consecutive Japanese number 1 singles.
'The Circle' arrived in April 2005, predictably another Japanese number one. Studio musicians included bassist Akihito Tokunaga with both Brian Tichy and Shane Gaalaas on drums. June 2006 offered up 'Monster'.
