Biography
In 1971 the powerhouse Blues Rock trio TASTE was seemingly on the cusp of international success. The band was being picked by Rock fans and critics alike as a potential supergroup but fell apart due to business problems and managerial disputes. In their short career the Irish combo had put out two well received studio albums, 'Taste' and 'On The Boards' and had performed at the mammoth 'Isle Of Wight' festival alongside JIMI HENDRIX and THE WHO.
TASTE had first been formulated by RORY GALLAGHER, a former member of THE FONTANAS, after his exit from IMPACT in 1965. The first combination of players saw Gallagher, still only sixteen years old, joined by bassist Oliver Tobin and drummer Johnny Campbell, both erstwhile IMPACT colleagues, but this union soon fractured. A fresh rhythm section saw Eric Kitteringham on bass and Norman D'Amery delegated to drums but this unit was short lived. Rebuilding the band the guitarist drafted Richard 'Charlie' McCraken and John Wilson, both Northern Ireland natives, and relocated to London. They would soon make an impact on the capital, scoring a recording contract with Polydor Records.
Only frontman RORY GALLAGHER, a naturally gifted guitarist, Blues purist and evocative vocalist, made the break into a solo career. Recording at London's Advision studio's with engineer Eddy Offord the resultant sessions became Gallagher's debut solo album, the eponymously titled 'Rory Gallagher'. From this point on Gallagher's star rose quickly, building up a loyal fanbase and going on to sell a staggering 30 million records.
Polydor Records would be quick to cash in on Gallagher's fame, releasing 'Live Taste' and 'Live At The Isle Of Wight' both in 1971, then issuing the album 'Take It Easy Baby' in 1974. Although credited to RORY GALLAGHER these sessions, laid down in July of 1967, were in fact TASTE demos.
