Biography
A resilient and unrelentingly heavy, hard hitting yet melodic act led by namesake vocalist / bassist Mat Sinner. Always based around the mainstay of Sinner, this hard hitting Baden-Württemberg based Rock act are, despite a profusion of albums, regrettably better known outside of Germany for their ex-members works than SINNER material. A shame, because SINNER have laid down some impressive material over the years and have proven consistently popular in their native country. SINNER debuted with a membership of ex-SHIVA bassist / vocalist Mat Sinner (real name Mattias Lasch), ex-ELECTRIC PAIN guitarist Frank Mittelbach and ex-STUTTGART axe slinger Calo Rapallo alongside erstwhile TYRAN PACE drummer Edgar Patrik.
1984's 'Danger Zone' album found the group touting a line-up comprised of Sinner, guitarist S.G. Stoner, bassist Mick Shirley and drummer Ralf Schulz (Patrick having left for a position in BONFIRE). The next album, 'Touch Of Sin' saw the addition of ex-ACCEPT guitarist Herman Frank and ex-VICTORY drummer Bernie Van Der Graaf. However, Frank's stay was short-lived as he left to join Van Der Graaf's erstwhile band VICTORY.
SINNER added a new guitar duo featuring erstwhile GRAVESTONE man Mathias Dieth (later to join U.D.O.) and former MAD MAX member Chris Gerhard for the 'Comin' Out Fighting' album in 1986, Gerhard becoming better known as Angel Schliefer. In fact, in 1987 Schliefer left to join Denmark's PRETTY MAIDS (later BONFIRE and DEMON DRIVE) his position being filled by Andy Susemihl.
1987 saw 'Dangerous Charm' being unleashed. An extremely melodic album, guitars were handled by Susemihl and Armin Mücke, although the latter quit after the album was recorded. He would soon be joined by Susemihl quitting to join U.D.O. Susemihl would also go forward to form LAZY with ZAR singer Tommy Bloch, a project that would record a number of impressive demos, before putting a solo album together.
During 1990 MAT SINNER issued the solo album 'Back To The Bullet' with a completely new band. Musicians included guitarists Alex Beyrodt (ex-WILD AXIS and SHORTINO) and Tom Naumann (ex-FREEZE FRAME and PRIVACY), keyboard player Frank Rössler, together with drummer Tommy Resch. The same line-up reformed SINNER to issue the 1992 album 'No More Alibis' on Mausoleum. Meantime, former SINNER drummer Bernie Van Der Graaf forged MR. PERFECT.
Intent on keeping the name very much to the fore SINNER undertook a headline tour of Germany in January 1994 with new drummer former VICTORY, ELOY and EPITAPH man Fritz Randow and in April of the same year the band guested for MR. BIG on their European tour. This renewed bout of touring coincided with the arrival of a 'best of' package from Noise that featured a rousing cover of BILLY IDOL's 'Rebel Yell', which remains a live favourite to this day. The 'Respect' album would see the inclusion of former SEVEN CRIMES guitarist Volker Dorfler- later of Southern Rockers LIZARD.
The group's stock seriously improved after signing to Koch International as SINNER achieved success with the 1995 album 'Bottom Line', a record that remained in the Japanese national charts for over five weeks. A live album was made available to cash in on SINNER's renewed standing. Entitled 'In The Line Of Fire', the album was recorded and mixed by Achim Köhler.
SINNER performed dates with SAVATAGE in early 1996 and, the following year, the new SINNER masterpiece, 'Judgement Day', arrived through High Gain Records. To promote the album SINNER hit the road with GRAVE DIGGER and, in September, the group were to be found on the bill of the 'Bang Your Head' festival in Tübingen, Germany,
Mat Sinner and Tom Naumann forged PRIMAL FEAR, the Heavy Metal outfit led by ex GAMMA RAY vocalist Ralf Scheepers in 1998. Since its inception PRIMAL FEAR has outranked SINNER in terms of sales and German chart positions although Mat Sinner has kept a foot in both camps throughout. SINNER would peak with the 1998 album 'The Nature Of Evil' which reached no. 63 on the national German album charts promoted by a support tour in Europe to DEEP PURPLE.
The JVC Victor label in Japan would issue a lavish double CD compilation entitled 'Emerald' backing up doubled up re-releases of 'Danger Zone / Touch Of Sin' and 'Comin Out Fightin / Dangerous Charm'. The European market would be delivered the silver box packaged 'Second Decade' collection. SINNER guitarist Alex Beyrodt evolved his THE SYGNET project into an album release in 1999 and also founded SILENT FORCE with ROYAL HUNT vocalist D.C. Cooper in 2000 for a self titled album. In 2001 Beyrodt would be founding guesting on the sophomore HEAVENLY album.
Sinner would donate his services to the GERMAN ROCK STARS October 2001 song 'Wings Of Freedom' in honour of the September 11th World Trade Center victims. Although Matt Sinner would be pre-occupied with PRIMAL FEAR's fourth album 'Black Sun' in early 2002 SINNER would still feature on the agenda, a new album with the projected title of 'There Will be Execution' slated for January 2003 issue. The record, recorded by a band resurrecting the 'Bottom Line' era roster comprising of Sinner, guitarists Tom Naumann and Henny Wolter, keyboard player Frank Rössler with SAXON drummer Fritz Randow, was slated to include a cover version of MONTROSE's classic 'Rock The Nation'. The band also cut a rendition of Wherever I May Roam' for a Nuclear Blast METALLICA tribute collection.
Mat Sinner would add guest session lead vocals on U.S. guitarist RICK RENSTROM's solo album 'Until The Bitter End', featuring on the track 'Calling on Vengeance'. In late 2004 Sinner revealed plans to invite the 'Comin' Out Fighting' guitar team of Mathias Dieth and Angel Schleifer back for a special 'Wacken Open Air' festival performance to be filmed for DVD.
SINNER announced signature to MTM Music in May 2006 for the album 'Mask Of Sanity'. Recording line-up comprised vocalist / bassist Mat Sinner, guitarist Tom Naumann and Frank Rössler on keyboards plus new recruits former PRIMAL FEAR and MY DARKEST HATE drummer Klaus Sperling with METALIUM's Matte Lange on second guitar. This unit entered Leon studio near Stuttgart, working with engineers Achim Köhler and Samson Geiger, in September. PRIMAL FEAR's Ralf Scheepers and BRAINSTORM's Andy B. Franck contributed backing vocals. Thomas Ohlsson, drummer for AXENSTAR, lent his songwriting skills. Initial limited editions of 'Mask Of Sanity' added THIN LIZZY cover version 'Baby Please Don't Go'.
The revised SINNER line-up, plus second guitarist Christof Leim of THE TRACEELORDS, made its live debut on October 7th at the H2O in Reichenbach supported by PRIMAL FEAR, PUMP and TARGA. The band was set to partner up with VENGEANCE and CHINCHILLA for European dates in March 2007. However, CHINCHILLA withdrew in acrimonious circumstances followed shortly afterwards by an announcement Mat Sinner had injured his arm, postponing the tour. Shortly afterward it was learned that former guitarist Henny Wolter had rejoined the fold. Dates were re-positioned for May.
SINNER wrapped up recording sessions for the album 'Crash & Burn', co-produced by Mat Sinner and Henny Wolter, and engineered by Dennis Ward, in mid June 2008. A promotional video for the song 'Revolution' was directed by SINNER's longtime collaborator Katja Piolka in Stuttgart.
In September 2008 AFM Records announced the signing of Mat Sinner and SILENT FORCE, SINNER and PRIMAL FEAR guitarist Alex Beyrodt's latest band project VOODOO CIRCLE. For an eponymous album they would be joined by singer David Readman, of PINK CREAM 69, drummer Mel Gaynor, citing credits with SIMPLE MINDS, GARY MOORE, BRIAN MAY and SAMSON plus keyboard player Jimmy Kresic.
