Biography

Nordic Folk Metal with a Gothic edge, famously fronted by Carmen Elise Espenæs, younger sister of LEAVES' EYES and THEATRE OF TRAGEDY's Liv Kristine Espenæs. Bass player Birgit Öllbrunner is also operational as part of Munich Death Metal band COMMANDER. Drummer Chris Merzinsky has affiliations with PENETRALIA and INTO DARKNESS.

The band's 2003 demo, leading to a deal with Napalm Records, was produced by ATROCITY's Alexander Krull. In September of 2004 Carmen Elise Espenæs was offered the chance to tour with CRADLE OF FILTH on their global road trip for the the 'Nymphetamine'. Priorities with recording a MIDNATTSOL album resulted in her declining the request.

To accompany the March 2005 album 'Where Twilight Dwells' MIDNATTSOL published a companion booklet, 'En Dans I Midnattsol', telling the tale of a "tragic relationship between a troll and a Norwegian girl". October found the band appearing at the Belgian 'Female Metal Voices III' festival alongside a cast comprising LACUNA COIL, LEAVES' EYES, EPICA, ELIS, THE LEGION OF HETHERIA, SKEPTICAL MINDS, MERCURY RAIN, ASRAI, AUTUMN, DILUVIUM and AFTER FOREVER.

2005 also saw Chris Merzinsky forming up R.I.P. ("Raw Intense Power"), primarily established by guitarist Björn Daigger of MAJESTY, IRONY, ANGUISH, RESPAWN INC. and INTO DARKNESS repute working with RESPAWN INC. man Fabian Pospiech on vocals and ex-ANGUISH sibling Sven Daigger on keyboards. Birgit Öllbrunner joined R.I.P. in August 2006.

The band featured on the bill of the EPICA headlined 'Metal Female Voices Fest VII' on 17th October 2009 at Oktoberhallen in Wieze, Belgium.
