Biography

Ludwigsburg/Remseck Doom Act founded by former members of GLASS CEMETARY. Bassist Joachim Schmalzried is ex-DEDE 7. The band's roots lay in the act CEMETARY which issued a 1990 demo tape 'Perfect Solitude', line up for these sessions being Gerrit P. Mutz on vocals, guitar and bass, drummer Oliver C. Schramm and later addition Dominic Merkt on bass guitar.

As DAWN OF WINTER the band laid down a 1991 demo 'Path Of The Worm' as a duo of Mutz and Schramm previous to the 1993 EP 'Celebrate The Agony' which saw the band boosted to a trio with the inclusion of bassist Joachim Schmalzried. Adding guitarist Jörg Michael Knittel and new drummer Dennis Schediwy DAWN OF WINTER cut a 12 track album 'Doomcult Performance' in 1994. However, this release never saw the light of day. A 14 track live tape from the same era also bore witness to only a restricted release. The following year a demo tape 'Black Revelations' was capitalised on by a 1996 promo 'In Servitude To Destiny'. Finally a commercial release, the album 'In The Valley Of Tears', surfaced on Knittel's own Iron Glory imprint during 1998.

Both vocalist Gerrit Phillip Mutz and guitarist Jörg Michael Knittel later joined TRAGEDY DIVINE releasing a Power Metal album for Noise Records. Both musicians founded the bombastic Metal band SACRED STEEL after TRAGEDY DIVINE folded. DAWN OF WINTER's activities continued in parallel to SACRED STEEL and in 2001 the EP 'Slow Is The Suffering' arrived. The previously shelved 'Doomcult Performance' album would also be slated for a 2002 release.

During 2004 Gerrit P. Mutz fronted up Flonheim Doom side combo ANGEL OF DAMNATION, one of a long line of Metal projects instigated by Avenger (a.k.a. Daniel Cichos). His other associations include acts such as BESTIAL DESECRATION, EXORCISM, FRONT BEAST, NECROSLAUGHTER, NOCTURNAL, POLTERGEIST, STORMHUNTER, VARGHKOGHARGASMAL and WITCHSLAUGHTER. Working with drummer Hellbastard, of NOCTURNAL and STONE COLD, on drums, Deathstrike Records released a 7" vinyl single, 'Angel Of Damnation', in 2004, as a limited edition of 500 copies pressed on orange vinyl.

During 2005 DAWN OF WINTER featured a cover version of CIRITH UNGOL's 'Doomed Planet' for inclusion on the Solemnity Music tribute album 'One Foot in Fire'.
