Biography

VICTORY came together in 1984, a band assembled by from the ashes of FARGO by bassist Peter Knorn, guitarists Tommy Newton and ex-WILD HORSES man John Lockton with drummer Bernie Van Der Graaf, the quartet having comprised the final incarnation of the antecedent Hannover based group. VICTORY quickly signed to the major league management of David Krebs after a recommendation by Rudolph Schenker of the SCORPIONS. The group would issue a string of commendable albums and would come tantalisingly close to breaking the North American market through radio play and extensive touring.

Having initially worked with a singer known as Pedro, who claimed links with SCORPIONS drummer Herman Rarebell, VICTORY's subsequent involvement with American ex-THRILLS singer Ted Bullitt lasted merely one gig prior to the man joining THUNDERHEAD. Through their management, VICTORY secured the services of vocalist Charlie Huhn who had previously sung with GARY MOORE and TED NUGENT. In 1985 the self-titled debut album, produced by Ric Browde, arrived on CBS Records, immediately provoking a storm of protest in America with its cover artwork depicting a naked female lying on her back with her legs spread in the victory sign! Obviously, the hype worked and as the album charted the band set of on their first North American tour, but not before drafting in new drummer Fritz Randow, ex-ELOY and EPITAPH.

Although beset by many problems on tour that would've had even SPINAL TAP tearing their hair out, VICTORY performed at major U.S. festivals, including Out In The Green in Oakland, to 60'000 people, and the Texas Jam, over 80'000 people. However, upon their arrival back in Germany, Lockton departed and was replaced by ex ACCEPT, SINNER and HAZZARD guitarist Hermann Frank.

The band broke themselves in with Frank on a short German tour before releasing the Ric Browde produced 'Don't Get Mad Get Even' for new label Metronome. Once more VICTORY toured North America and the single 'Check's In The Mail', remixed by Michael Wagener, provided the band with a useful radio hit.

In June 1987 VICTORY returned to the studio once more to self produce 'Hungry Hearts'. The album emerged in December 1987. VICTORY backed it up with an autumn tour of North America, supporting MANOWAR, quickly followed by a European tour, during which they recorded a show in Hamburg in January 1988 for release as the live album 'That's Live'. Shortly after it's release Huhn was offered the job as vocalist with a reformed HUMBLE PIE and quit VICTORY, leaving the door open for 22 year old Fernando 'El toro loco' Garcia, who grabbed the vacant post as VICTORY's new vocalist.

Recorded at Wisseloord studios in Hilversum, the band's fourth album, 'Culture Killed The Native', was produced by Albert Boekholt and hit the German national charts in May 1989. The record reached no. 19 and also provided the band with another minor hit Stateside. VICTORY toured Europe with Garcia as support to GARY MOORE before once more hitting America as headliners, including their debut shows in Canada. Both 'Don't Tell Lies' and 'Never Satisfied' gave VICTORY more exposure on radio and MTV.

Wishing to repeat a winning formula, the band once more used Wisseloord studios and Albert Boekholt to record 1990's 'Temples Of Gold'. Initial copies of the German version included a free six track EP of live material recorded in Los Angeles.

Once again, VICTORY found themselves with success in the national German charts as October 1990's 'Temples Of Gold' broke the top 20. In 1991 VICTORY were back touring in America and the following year Metronome compiled the collection 'Rock n' Roll Kids Forever - The Very Best Of Victory'.

1992's amusingly titled 'You Bought It You Name It' was produced by the band and featured the STYLUS HORNS brass section on a number of songs, but in 1993 VICTORY released their supposed "farewell" record, a double live affair dubbed 'Liveline' on GSE Records, although the group would reform two years later.

1996's 'Voiceprint', recorded for SPV Steamhammer Records, found VICTORY's roster boasting the nucleus of Garcia, Newton and Knorn working with guitarist Jake Paland and drummer Matthias Liebetruth. Japanese variants added three extra songs in 'Green Manalishi', a cover version of the FLEETWOOD MAC classic, 'The Hunter' and 'On The Loose'.

In addition to his ongoing role in VICTORY, Tommy Newton had also made a name for himself as a producer of such works as HELLOWEEN's 'Keeper Of The Seven Keys' and albums from GAMMA RAY. Peter Knorn became involved on the business side of Rock n' Roll, becoming manager of ULI JON ROTH, GLENN HUGHES and MICHAEL SCHENKER. In 1999 the VICTORY pairing of Tommy Newton and drummer Matthias Liebetruth were back in the studio, contributing their skills to an album by former DEADLOCK frontman Frankie Riester dubbed FRANKIE'S PLAYGROUND. During 2000 former singer Charlie Huhn joined veteran British Boogie act FOGHAT.

Fernando Garcia, in the midst of assembling his new project band BISS, would donate his services to the GERMAN ROCK STARS October 2001 song 'Wings Of Freedom' in honour of the September 11th World Trade Center victims. By October of 2002 rumours were circulating regarding a proposed VICTORY reformation, confirmed when Fernando Garcia declined an offer of re-instatement to concentrate on his new act FIRECHAIN. Garcia also made space to record vocals for WICKED SENSATION's 'Exceptional' album. The new victory singer would be announced as Jioti Parcharidis, previously of HUMAN FORTRESS.

Pushing a brand new album for 2006, 'Fuel To The Fire' on the Armageddon label, VICTORY, with ex-PUMP man Achim Keller on drums, partnered with the MICHAEL SCHENKER GROUP and NIKKI PUPPET for European gigs in May. That June the group was back on the road in Europe packaged with openers GORILLA MONSOON and headline band METAL CHURCH.
