Biography

East Frisian Black Metal act FUNERAL PROCESSION emerged with the 1999 five track demo simply entitled 'Doom'. This tape, limited to 300 copies, would be distributed by the Chanteloup Creations concern. The 'Doom' sessions witnessed a band line up of Count Gothmog on bass, DESPONDENCY vocalist K. Lühring, guitarist S. Lange and drummer H. Luken. TENEBRE's Satyrus Sancti sessioned keyboards and additional guitars whilst Florian Engelke of INGURGITAING OBLIVION and GALLERY OF DARKNESS made his presence felt on background vocals.

The band had actually been formed as FROST some four years earlier as a trio of Lühring, Lange and Lüken, with Count Gothmog of STOERMFLOOD enrolling during January of 1998. However, S. Lange decamped in Spring of the same year. CARPE NOCTEM and IWEIN guitarist Iwein filled the vacancy but then in October H. Lüken opted out, followed by K. Lühring. Gothmog took over lead vocal responsibilities and FUNERAL PROCESSION persevered under his guidance.

A split 7" single on Phlegethon Productions in collaboration with ENCONIUM 'Under An Endarkened Skie' followed in July of 2000. This release saw Gothmog and Iwein joined by M. Sore of DESPONDENCY handling drums.

A 2002 demo 'Solar Eclipse' would see Count Gothmog and Iwein joined by Ole of HAGAL occupying the drum stool and Satyrus Sancti contributing keyboards once again. FUNERAL PROCESSION donated their rendition of 'Der Ruf Aus Dem Turm' to the 2002 BURZUM tribute album 'Visions' released by the Unholy label. Count Gothmog relocated from Germany to Wales in September of 2002.

Under the project title THE LONESOME PROCESSION, Count Gothmog collaborated with Alboin Goldmund from EISMALSOTT in July of 2004 on a cover of 'The Woodwoman' to feature on a BATHORY tribute album compiled by the Swedish label Total Holocaust Records.

FUNERAL PROCESSION marked a return in late 2004 by announcing the EP 'Legion Cymru' ("Welsh legion"), recorded at the Kargewelten Studios in Hamburg and Laubhaus Studios in Beentsteek. The EP, which included a cover version of VON's 'Christ Fire', would be released as a 7" single by Nightfog Productions in Germany) as a mini-CD by Germany's Millennial Visions and as a cassette with added bonus tracks by Intolerant Rekords of Canada. A further track, 'Lost In The Cursed Forest Of Olde...', would be contributed to the Millennial Visions compilation "Albania Is The Future'.
