Biography

AMYRIS, taking their name from Greek myth, came together in Frankfurt during late 1998 as a union between former ELYSIAN FIELDS drummer Victor M. Garcia Sanchez with guitarist Jürgen Pfrang. Taking an original band title of UNIO MYSTICA bassist Jirka Dimitrov enrolled before the year was out. However, this latest recruit was sacked in March of 1999. Bringing the band up to strength the former MAJERE musicians guitarist Kai Bender and keyboard player Thomas Lehr enrolled. Dimitrov then rejoined but within months had been dismissed yet again. A temporary substitute on bass would be Steffen Wieners.

Still billed as UNIO MYSTICA in early 2000 the ZIRON, CRYSTAL CROW and SCARLATYNA credited Chris J. Marino joined as lead vocalist whilst Q-SQUAD and INFINITY man Stefan Thon took on the bass role. That March the group evolved into AMYRIS and commenced work on the EP recordings 'Desolate Messiah' for the Apanage Music label.

Unfortunately, following the inaugural AMYRIS live performance in June of 2001, Garcia quit. His substitute would be ex-BLACK IN MIND drummer Franz-Josef Kowolik. Both Thon and Marino bowed out in early 2003 and the band re-grouped by drawing in singers Lars Bittner and Volker Bach. Group founder Jürgen Pfrang took his leave in March 2005, being replaced by SYNCHRONIC man Dominik Stotzem. Another casualty was Volker Bach, exiting in August 2007.

Ex-frontman Chris Marino would feature with DESTROYED EDEN, FLAMING SENSES and SAVAGE SANCTUM.

AMYRIS issued the album 'ProgressIIProcess' in 2007.
