Biography
Named after H.G. Wells horrific vision of a mutated future race in his classic novel 'The Time Machine' ELOY are without question long been recognized as Germany's premier exponents of Progreesive Rock. Based around member Frank Bornemann the band have evolved over numerous albums heavily reliant on keyboards.
ELOY were founded as a school band in the late 60's. Success at a local talent contest provided the impetus for a self financed single. ELOY's inaugural line up being vocalist Erich Schiever, guitarists Frank Bornemann and Manfred Wieczorke, bassist Wolfgang Stöcher and drummer Helmut Draht. Bornemann adopted the role of lead vocalist following the release of the eponymous debut album. Further changes ensued as Wieczoeke shifted over to keyboards and Draht made way for erstwhile EPITAPH man Fritz Randow on drums.
Luitjen Janssen supplanted Stöcher for the concept effort 'Power And Passion'. For this album ELOY broadened their scope by pulling in second guitarist Detlef Schwaar. 'Power And Passion' gave ELOY a commercial success with sales in excess of 30'000 units even prompting their first tour of America but within the year Bornemann had broken up the group due to time honoured musical differences.
Bornemann reassembled the band within months. ELOY now comprising of Bornemann, former THE GENERALS, BOORTURM, MORRISON GULF and KRAAN bassist Klaus Peter Matziol, keyboard player Detlef Schmidtchen and ex-MORRISON GULF drummer Jürgen Rosenthal. Wirczorke had left for pastures new in space rockers JANE for three albums and Rosentahl would join DAWN ROAD and SCORPIONS.
ELOY fans were obviously unperturbed by ELOY's ever fluid line up as the result of this liaison, 1976's 'Dawn' album, broke the 100'000 sales barrier in Germany alone. ELOY were quick to build upon this breakthrough and 1977's 'Ocean' gave them their biggest selling album to date. Both the 1978 'Live' album and it's studio follow up 'Silent Cries And Mighty Echoes' made strong impressions in the German charts.
As a new decade broke with 1980's 'Colours' ELOY found themselves without Rosenthal or Schmidtchen. New recruits came in the shape of guitarist Hannes Arkona, keyboardist Hannes Folberth and EPITAPH founder member drummer Jim McGillivray. 1981's 'Planets' not only gave ELOY the by now expected profile in Germany but also became their first album to make an impression in England due to a licensing deal with Heavy Metal Records. For the British market ELOY's output was repackaged in elaborate sleeve designs by renowned artist Rodney Matthews.
By 1982 ELOY had re-employed Randow. This version performed their debut British show at London's Marquee club in the summer of 1984.
Matziol released a solo album 'Matze' on Zip Records in 1983 and followed this with a further solo project act ECHOPARK.
In 1985 Randow joined the high profile Hard Rock outfit VICTORY. For the 1989 release 'Ra' the band essentially was now operating as a duo of Bornemann and keyboard player Michael Gerlach. Guesting musicians included guitarist Christopher Rennert. ELOY undertook a 25 year anniversary tour of Germany in 1994 as 'Ra' gave the band yet another German chart success.
The compilation albums 'Chronicles I & II' feature reworked versions of older material. With interest in ELOY unwavering in their homeland the band regrouped once more with Matziol to issue 'The Tides Return Forever' album in 1994. The resulting tour found ELOY utilising the services of ex-MICHAEL SCHENKER GROUP members Bodo Schopf and Steve Mann.
Bornemann is a noted producer handling many rock acts including GLENMORE, LETTER X and CZAKAN. Randow would go on to become a member of SINNER, MOON'DOC and subsequently British veterans SAXON.
