Biography

Essen based trio formed in 1982 as TORMENTOR, with a line-up comprising vocalist / drummer Ventor (a.k.a. Jürgen Reil), guitarist Mille Petrozza and bassist Rob Fioretti, rooted back to the school band TYRANT. Having adopted the new monicker of KREATOR, the individualistic German outfit was to become much favoured by European Thrash fans in the mid 80s. The band set itself apart from the pack with a series of albums that defined an original strain to the standard Thrash sound. As such, KREATOR soon became a major force on the European mainland and their cult appeal and reputation also reaped rewards in North America.

Having debuted with the venom filled 'Endless Pain', produced by Horst Müller over a ten day session at Berlin's Musiclab Studios, in October 1985, KREATOR toured Europe and North America consistently, improving with each album release and keen to augment their live sound would spend time searching for a second guitarist. Michael Wulf from SODOM joined for a brief period in 1986. and KREATOR, pushing second album 'Pleasure To Kill' released in April 1986, would be found sharing the billing with RAGE and DESTRUCTION that year, after which guitarist Jorg Tritze was added to the line-up. Despite being firmly entrenched in Trash territory, 'Pleasure To Kill's uncompromisingly brutal ferocity, honed by Harris Johns at the production desk, would inspire legions of latter day Death Metal combos. That August the 'Flag Of Hate' EP arrived, kicking off with a re-recorded, speeded up version of the 'Flag Of Hate' track from 'Endless Pain', this interim product actually scoring the band high praise.

In October 1987 KREATOR toured Britain, packaged with VIRUS and CELTIC FROST, then America as support to D.R.I. backed by a promotion video for 'Toxic Trace' that gained the band valuable MTV exposure. It ensured sales of the band's third album, 'Terrible Certainty', recorded at Hannover's Horus Studios with producer Roy Rowland, were racked up ever more and set the tone for the subsequent 'Into The Light' and April 1989 'Extreme Aggression' offerings. The latter album was produced by leading American based Thrash knob twiddler Randy Burns at Los Angeles' Music Grinder Studios and, amongst all new KREATOR originals, featured a cover version of the RAVEN track 'Lambs To The Slaughter'. 'Extreme Aggression', boosted by MTV rotation of a video for 'Betrayer', would give the band their biggest selling record to date.

Just prior to their 1989 American tour playing alongside SUICIDAL TENDENCIES Tritze was ousted in favour of SODOM's Frank Blackfire (a.k.a. Frank Gosdzik).

This line-up would record 1990's 'Coma Of Souls' in Los Angeles; once again with Randy Burns at the production helm. A rather bizarre incident occurred later the same year when KREATOR pulled out of their London Electric Ballroom show complaining that they would have to play with a decibel meter in attendance! Still, no such problems prevented the group from undertaking Mexican gigs in July 1991 with support from TRANSMETAL, MAKINA, NEXT and LEPROSSY.

KREATOR completed a successful South American tour in 1992 performing in Chile, Brazil and Argentina. KREATOR were now pushing the 'Renewal' album, laid down at Morrissound Studios in Tampa with Tom Morris.

Having left Noise after a lengthy relationship of nearly ten years, KREATOR signed to G.U.N. Records in late 1994 with the first fruits of the new deal coming in the form of 1995's 'Cause For Conflict'. The group also introduced a new line-up of Petrozza, Blackfire bassist Christian Giesler and ex-WHIPLASH drummer Joe Cangelosi. However, by the end of the year both Godszik and Cangelosi were to depart. The band filled the gap with former CORONER guitarist Tommy Vetterli (a.k.a. Tommy T. Baron) and Jürgen Reil returning to the drum position. However, inflamed tendons saw Vetterli taking a back seat for some shows necessitating RAGS, JIMSONWEED and WALTARI man Sami li-Sirniö deputizing. With the band once again gaining momentum, Noise Records rushed out the 'Scenarios Of Violence' collection of live material and re-mixed archive cuts to satisfy demand.

In addition to a brace of new records in 1996 and 1997, KREATOR contributed a version of JUDAS PRIEST's 'Grinder' to the Century Media 'Legends Of Metal Volume II' tribute album in 1996.

Touring in Germany to push the 'Outcast' opus in the Winter of 1997 saw the band headlining a billing over DIMMU BORGIR, RICHTHOFEN and Brazilians KRISIUN. This album would be a radical departure from the expected KREATOR norm as the group freely indulged in almost Gothic ambience and applied the brakes to their usual hectic delivery. Instead, KREATOR's music now brooded rather than bludgeoned. The change generated praise from the media but consternation from a large body of fans. Nevertheless, KREATOR continued the experiment with March 1999's 'Endorama'. Japanese versions of 'Endorama', through the Jvictor label, added an extra track in 'Children Of A Lesser God'. Also issued would be retrospective collections 'Voices Of Transgression - A 90's Retrospective' in 1999 and '1985-1992 Past Life Trauma' in 2000.

The band's own status was recognised when a tribute album to KREATOR emerged in 2000 titled 'Raise The Flag Of Hate'. Contributors included PAZUZU, ANGEL CORPSE, ACHERON, MYSTIFER and BLACK WITCHERY.

Vetterli was out of the picture for the recording of the 2001 album 'Violent Revolution', a revisiting of their speed orientated glory years produced by former SABBAT guitarist and respected console-tweaker Andy Sneap: he was supplanted by Yli-Sirniö., the same figure who temporarily replaced him for live work earlier. Promoting the album, which landed in the German album charts at no. 38, found KREATOR with running mates CANNIBAL CORPSE for European touring. The band would then form part of a nostalgic Thrash Metal mammoth tour of Europe with compatriots SODOM and DESTRUCTION commencing 26th December in Ludwigsburg and running through into the new year.

KREATOR frontman Mille Petrozza would also guest on shared lead vocals in union with THE CROWN and ex AT THE GATES singer Tomas Lindberg for the track 'Dirty Coloured Knife' on the 2002 album from Israeli metal act EMBLAZE. Also in the works for Petrozza would be a guest appearance on the new album from fellow Germany Thrashers DESASTER.

KREATOR's successful live alliance with DESTRUCTION would be furthered abroad as the pairing revealed tour plans for dates in Brazil, Chile, Peru, Colombia and Venezuela throughout August and September. That same month the band would head up a two month trek across North America, their first visit since 1996. KREATOR topped a bill for the 'Hell Comes To Your Town' tour of DESTRUCTION, CEPHALIC CARNAGE and DECEMBER. A live album and DVD, 'Live Kreation (Revisioned Glory)' produced by Andy Sneap and mixed in 5.1 surround sound, would be scheduled for early 2003.

KREATOR's live schedule intensified with September North American dates dubbed 'The Art Of Noise 2'. This run of shows saw the band allied with NILE, VADER, AMON AMARTH and GOATWHORE. Retiring to Backstage Studios in Derbyshire, England in the Spring of 2004 the group then set about recording a brand new album 'Enemy Of God' with Andy Sneap once again acting as producer. ARCH ENEMY guitarist Michael Amott recorded a guest solo for the song 'Murder Fantasies'. Some unusual promotion included Mille Petrozza appearing on German TV on 19th November, not on a music show, but as a guest for children's programme 'KinderKanal', explaining the complexities of Thrash Metal to an audience of pre-school kids.

The album, scheduled for January 2005 release, saw a limited edition version with a bonus DVD containing a "making of" documentary and video clips. 'Enemy Of God' impressively entered the national German charts at no. 19. Live promotion found KREATOR teaming up with DARK TRANQUILLITY, EKTOMORF and HATESPHERE for the 'Enemy of God' tour commencing in February 2005. US shows in April had the band packaged with VADER and THE AUTUMN OFFERING. Californian Thrashers DEATH ANGEL would be originally scheduled to participate but would be replaced by PRO-PAIN. A notable gig in early June saw KREATOR carving out a slice of Rock history by being the first foreign Metal band to perform in Morocco. The band played in Casablanca in front of an estimated crowd of 20,000.

KREATOR would be back on North American soil in early 2006, packaged with NAPALM DEATH, UNDYING and A PERFECT MURDER for gigs in February. The group announced Australian shows for August. That October Steamhammer breathed new life into the 'Enemy Of God' album, re-issuing it in new artwork as a double CD and DVD package featuring the band's 'Wacken Open Air' festival appearance plus promotional videos and other live footage.

KREATOR headed up a package billing with CELTIC FROST, LEGION OF THE DAMNED and WATAIN for a lengthy run of European dates throughout March 2007. Early the following the group issued the 'At The Pulse Of Kapitulation - Live In East Berlin 1990' DVD featuring the previously released 'Live In East Berlin' and 'Hallucinative Comas' sets, both re-edited and previously only available on VHS video cassette.

KREATOR entered the Titonus studios in Berlin on July 20th 2008 to begin recording album tracks for 'Hordes Of Chaos' with producer Moses Schneider.  These tracks were mixed by Colin Richardson in London.

KREATOR undertook an extensive nationwide tour of the USA commencing on 7th April 2009 at the Sonar in Baltimore, Maryland with strong support from EXODUS, Austria's BELPHEGOR, WARBRINGER and EPICUREAN.
