Berlin's kilt wearing IN EXTREMO formed part of the new German Folk Metal trend as purveyed by the equally successful SUBWAY TO SALLY and strangely started by English act SKYCLAD. IN EXTREMO mould Metal with medieval stage garb and unashamed usage of such bizarre, sometimes hand made, instruments as the Scottish bagpipes from the imposing figure of the completely bald and heavily tattooed Dr. Pymonte.

The band were created by ex-NOAH members vocalist Das Letzte Einhorn ('The last unicorn' real name Michael Rhein) and bagpipe player Dr. Pymonte broke away to forge a new act in 1996. Guitarist Thomas Der Münzer, bassist Die Lutter and drummer Der Morgenstern were recruited to found IN EXTREMO. Later draftees were bagpipe player and flautist Flex Der Biegsame ('Flex the flexable') and Yellow Pfeiffer ('Yellow Whistler') handling bagpipes, flute and harp.

The band debuted in 1998 with the album 'Die Goldene' followed by 'Weckt Die Toten' ('Wake The Dead') released by the Stars In The Dark concern. With an accelerating degree of success IN EXTREMO would sign to Megalux imprint, an offshoot of the Universal major label. 'Die Verrückten sind in der Stadt' ('The Madmen Are In Town') proved to be a limited release acoustic offering upfront of the 'Verehrt und Angespien' ('Honoured And Spat Upon') release which solidified the band's standing scoring a no. 11 position in the national German album charts. Promoting the album across Europe IN EXTREMO put in memorable performances at many of the established Summer season Rock festivals such as 'Dynamo Open Air', 'Roskilde', 'Bizarre', 'Rock am Ring', 'Rock im Park', 'Southside' and 'Hurricane' events.

IN EXTREMO issued their third properly commercialy available album 'Sünder Ohne Zügel' ('Unbridled Sinner') in September of 2001. In September of 2002 the band would hook up with ATROCITY for a short run of dates in Mexico.

IN EXTREMO returned to the European stages in October of 2003, support coming from Italians EXILIA. The accompanying album, '7', gave the band their highest European chart positions to date.

The band, alongside DORO, BONFIRE, EDGUY, CRYSTAL BALL and SAXON would be among acts participating in the 27th January 2005 'Rock for Asia' festival held at the Saturn Arena in Ingolstadt, Germany to benefit the victims of the December Indian Ocean tsunami disaster. IN EXTREMO released a ten year anniversary album, entitled 'Kein Blick Zurück' ("No Looking Back"), in December via Universal Music in Germany. In addition to re-recordings of some of the band's more well known tracks the set contained a bonus CD featuring cover versions of songs by SILBERMOND's 'Die Gier', GÖTZ ALSMANN's 'Singapur', KILLING JOKE, GRAVE DIGGER and OUGENWEIDE. IN EXTREMO lined up Mexican dates for early 2007.

The band played the THIN LIZZY, SAXON, UFO, MOTÖRHEAD and HEAVEN AND HELL headlined August 2009 'Wacken Open Air' festival in Germany. For the December 2009 acoustic tour the hospitalized Morgenstern was superseeded by crew member Otto on drums. The group surprised during these live dates with new arrangements of all the IN EXTREMO hits, a new outfit and especially with AC/DC on bagpipes when performing 'It's A Long Way To The Top (If You Wanna Rock 'n' Roll)'.
