Biography

Art Rock band EINSTÜRZENDE NEUBAUTEN are a band who set out to defy conformity. The band are renowned for their improvisational avant garde performances and have use unconventional instruments to achieve sounds including the use of meat, concrete mixers, electric saws and sand! In keeping with their eclectic nature the band have performed live in some unexpected venues including the Mojave desert and the Nuremburg Goldener Saal, the venue for Hitler's speechs.

The band's initial line up comprised of Blixa Bargeld on vocals and guitar, American Andrew Unruh, Beate Bartel on percussion and Godrun Gut on percussion. Shortly after another percussionist, Alexander Van Borsig, was added. This incarnation of EINSTÜRZENDE NEUBAUTEN issued the 1980 single 'Für Den Untergang'. That May the cassette 'N.DIH/BLIXA/SUSÄ' saw issue on the Eisengrau label. With only 12 copies manufactured, this release, also known as 'Valium', soon became highly sought after. Another rarity would be the cassette 'Chaos -> Sehnsucht : Energie', with only 20 copies made that June. In October a further cassette emerged, 'Stahlwerk', once again with just 20 copies being made. This session would be re-issued by Rip Off Records in 1981, with 600 copies being manufactured.

Bartel and Gut departed in 1981 to create MANIA D, the gap being filled by erstwhile ABWÄRTS man F.M. Einheit (real name Stuart Mufti). The debut album 'Kollaps' followed the same year. To follow it up EINSTÜRZENDE NEUBAUTEN issued the 'Durstiges Tier' EP in collaboration with Lydia Lunch and THE BIRTHDAY PARTY.

Another ex member of ABWÄRTS, bassist Marc Chung, was drafted for the sophomore release 1983's 'Drawings Of Patient OT'. 1985's 'Halber Mensch' album had yet another new recruit guitarist Alexander Hacke. EINSTÜRZENDE NEUBAUTEN's 1986 cassette album 'Ein Document's lyric booklet included photographs from the film 'Berlin - Eine brodelnde Kulturszene' directed by Tadashi Hirai.

Blixa Bargeld temporarily joined NICK CAVE & THE BAD SEEDS as guitarist as Hacke also involved himself in outside projects namely CRIME &THE CITY SOLUTION.

The 1996 album 'Ende Neu' saw John Spencer and Alec Empire guesting.

Previous to 2000's 'Silence Is Sexy' bassist Mark Chung departed. His replacement was killed in a car crash before recording commenced. F.M. Einheit also quit. Bargeld avhieved notoriety in the movie world too- he is the voice of the creature from the 1999 film 'The Mummy'!

In October and November of 2004 the band recorded three concerts which were immediately sold as CD-Rs following each show. Subsequently a limited run of 250 copies of each was made available through the official website. The band repeated this process, although increasing the amount of concert recordings to 18 in total, for their Spring 2005 25th anniversary tour. In addition the the separate CDs, all the concerts collected together were available on a 80GB USB hard drive designed by F. A. Porsche, complete with a certificate of authenticity which was hand numbered by Blixa Bargeld and signed by all band members.
