Biography

Punk act DIE SKEPTIKER was founded in the German Democratic Republic during 1986 by Berlin native Eugen Balanskat on lead vocals, guitarists Andreas Kupsch and Christoph Buntrock, bassist Andreas Welfle and Marcel Hofer on drums. The band, alongside SANDOW, DIE ARTFEELING B, TAUSEND TONNEN OBST and DIE FIRMA, were known as one of the "Die anderen Bands" ("the other bands") movement, bringing a new of music to the socialist culture in the G.D.R. The Punk-oriented music rapidly put DIE SKEPTIKER in direct conflict to the socialist regime, making single and album-productions at the one and only state owned East German record label, Amiga, not possible. As such, the first releases from the band were two self produced and self distributed tapes, 'O.T. (Ohne Titel)' in 1988 and 'Schreie' in 1989. Eventually, Amiga produced an EP, 1989's 'Die Anderen Bands', and an LP 'Harte Zeiten' in 1990, the final year of communist rule in the G.D.R. Unfortunately the reunion of Germany and the shift in the political landscape directly affected the structure of the band as members exited, leaving DIE SKEPTIKER under the sole control of Balanskat in this time of the reunion of Germany. Hofer later joined the bands HALMAKENREUTHER and SUB DUB MICROMACHINE.

During the 90s DIE SKEPTIKER would be characterized by often changing formations around band mastermind Eugen Balanskat. The line-up for the 1991 recording 'Sauerei' featured Balanskat alongside guitarists Lars Rudell and Jan Fretwurst, bass guitarist Mathias Kahle and drummer Günther Spalda. The 'Stahlvogelkrieger' album gave DIE SKEPTIKER some of their biggest hits with 'Straßenkampf', 'Der Rufer In Der Wüste Schweigt' and 'Hinter Den Mauern Der Stadt'. Despite this success, progress was marred by neo-Nazi violence at a concert in Röderau.

During 1993 the band employed drummer Uli Kusch, previously a member of VIOLENT KIDS, HOLY MOSES, GAMMA RAY and JK SPECIAL, and later to join the high profile HELLOWEEN. The following year Andy Laaf enrolled as drummer and Mathias Kahle replaced Christoph Zimmermann on bass, this formation producing the albums 'Schwarze Boten' during 1993, LIVE' in 1994 and 'Stahlvogelkrieger' in 1995. Subsequently, both Laaf and Zimmermann scored credits with BLIND PASSENGERS, the bassist also being associated with FEELING B.

For the 10th anniversary of the band all the former members reunited in October 1996 for one concert in the Kesselhaus in Berlin, this show being documented on the 1996 album 'Frühe Werke'.

Following the 1998 album 'Wehr Dich!' DIE SKEPTIKER disappeared from the music scene, their last formation being quoted at Eugen Balanskat, Lars Rudell, ex-EXTRABREIT and JINGO DE LUNCH guitarist Tom Schwoll, Henning Menke on bass and drummer Lars Thomas, the lattergoing on to join YELLOWHOUSE and NEILALIEN.

2006 the band was re-formed by Balanskat to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the band's foundation. A DVD from this birthday tour was released in 2008. Tours in fall 2008 and 2009 followed as well as the release of the the 'Fressen Und Moral' studio album in October 2009.
