Biography

Southern German outfit with a reputation for gigging hard proving Germans do in fact possess an ironic sense of humour when it comes to choosing names for Heavy Metal bands! CHINCHILLA actually folded after the 'No Mercy Tonight' album but re-emerged with a fresh line up for 1994's 'Who Is Who' mini album. New recruits were erstwhile LETTER X and BROTHERS IN ARMS vocalist Martin Obermeier, bassist Mike Kühner and drummer Michael Vetter.

CHINCHILLA underwent further line-up ructions welcoming in bassist Marc Peters and drummer Steffan Theurer. Peters had previously been in BROTHERS IN ARMS, the act that also comprised of ex-JEALOUS HEART and RAW drummer Chris Grenzer, former HALL OF FAME guitarist Alan Le Baron as well as Obermeier.

By 1996 CHINCHILLA had added a keyboard player Marc Steck. The 'Horrorscope' album, released in Europe by Point Music in 1999 and featuring new vocalist Thomas Laasch, was originally issued a full two years earlier in Japan by Virgin. In January 2000 the band played its first European tour as a support for VANDEN PLAS. The band would also put in appearances at the German 'Bang Your Head' festival and the Swiss 'Biker Union 2000' events.

This run of dates increased the band's profile enough to land a deal with Metal Blade Records. A third album, 'Madness' once more produced by Achim Köhler, arrived in March of 2001. CHINCHILLA's line up at this juncture comprised of Thomas Laasch on vocals, Udo Gerstenmeyer on guitar, Marc Peters on bass, keyboard player Marc Steck and drummer Steffen Theurer.

CHINCHILLA would form part of a touring package alongside TAD MOROSE and veteran British act DEMON for dates throughout February and March 2002. Later shows in October found the band packaged with POWERGOD and VALLEY'S EVE. A new studio album set for early 2003 release, entitled 'Madtropolis' and seeing production credits going to Achim Köhler, found erstwhile MOTȪRHEAD guitarist FAST EDDIE CLARKE contributing a solo to the track 'When The Sand Darkens The Sun'. Once again the CHINCHILLA formation had changed shape, the band now citing a line up of Gerstenmayer, Laasch, bass player Josh Häberle, keyboard player Artur Diessner and drummer Criss Schwinn.

An extensive round of Scandinavian and European shows throughout September and October 2004 saw CHINCHILLA opening up for DREAM EVIL, METALIUM and SAXON. Live work in September 2005 witnessed supports to DEMON.

CHINCHILLA was set to partner up with VENGEANCE and SINNER for European dates in March 2007. However, CHINCHILLA withdrew in acrimonious circumstances followed shortly afterwards by an announcement Mat Sinner had injured his arm, postponing the tour.

CHINCHILLA's 2008 new album, 'The Prophecy', featured guest musicians including guitarist Cliff Evans, of TANK and KILLERS, on the track 'Bad Guy', and Tom Naumann, ex-PRIMAL FEAR and SINNER, on the song 'Unknown Heroes'.
